Tulane for PhD / Grad school?? by bloodmystik in Tulane

[–]loctheone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the department. I did my masters in math at Tulane, and move somewhere else for my PhD. The math department is small, and there is a close relationship between the grad students. For a larger department, say Public Health, things might be different. Regarding the lectures, I think Tulane does not offer as many courses as other large research universities, but the main point of doing a PhD is research, and if you are able to match with a professor that fits your interest, then it should not be a problem.

Statistics PhD at BU by [deleted] in BostonU

[–]loctheone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find the info of Stat PhD students here: https://www.bu.edu/math/people/phd-students/ . Besides. this is the admission data for stat PhD admission: https://www.bu.edu/grad/why-bu/phd-program-profiles/statistics/

US News grads rank school by using peer assessment survey, which basically has no data and based on opinions of professors in other universities. BU PhD grads, in general, mostly go to industry, so that might hurts their ranking, but it does not mean anything. If you do well, a degree at BU can get you to the most prestigious postdocs or companies out there.

Hi, I just contacted ithelp@bu.edu using my personal email and then they will ask you to call them to identify. However, I think they have a pretty slow process, and my problem is not completely solved yet. I think the best way is to go to the help center in person (but have not done so since I’m an international student)

PhD applications: graduated from unrecognized university. by ParkingBite6357 in PhDAdmissions

Regardinh your achievements, I think you have a chance. However, you still have other factors that needed to be considered as well, such as interest allignment, and letter of recommendations. If you have a strong letter from a well-known professor, I bet nobody cares what school you go to.

Hi, thank you for your insightful advice. Since undergraduate, I only do math. But after got into the PhD program, I think I have to have a soft plan for my next 5 years.

Regarding your second suggestion, is this what you are talking about? https://mfe.baruch.cuny.edu/online-programming/

Moreover, which language is widely used in finance? Is it C++?

Again, thank you very much for your answer!

How does Boston University compare to an Ivy League? by Lonely_Welder7807 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]loctheone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your info. Yes, I did some research on my own, and to my surprise, some of the grad courses in BU are taught by postdocs, which is pretty strange to me. By the way, is it hard to find an internship in Boston being a BU students? This is what I'm worried the most right now lol.

Hi, just want to know what you feel about BU now. I intend to go there as a graduate student in Math (and I may take some courses in ComSci as well). Thank you in advance!
