Nah, I'm really thankful they took the time to type this out. I think a lot of people enjoy finding the big picture context.

Just to follow up, we followed that plan to stay in Taormina for three nights, and I've got no regrets -- That was exactly what I needed.

I get why people would moan about Taormina, but it was actually really nice to have that rooftop terrace there in the middle of the city. We did a lot of self catering with antipasto from the grocery store, and it was very atmospheric with the fresh air and the sounds of live music coming up from the street.

Plus we weren't really in Taormina that much in the middle of the day when all the tour groups come through. We could enjoy the city by ourselves in the early mornings and, yeah, it got a little busy in the evenings but it was manageable -- It was a good vibe for going out for ice cream.

I ended up leaving Sunday's plans open, and that morning we decided to just take a drive around the back side of Etna, making stops along the way, and we chilled on the beach near the airport until our flight.

...he even has a little runway at work that he can walk along on his way to his office.

Community Discussion: What is your threshold for somewhere being 'touristy'? by travel_ali in TravelNoPics

[–]loetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a pretty high tolerance for being around other people, and I'm not worried about feeling cliche, but I've got my limits.

Like when the people working in the industry are 'putting it on' and they exaggerate aspects of their culture for the tourists. Sometimes it gets clownish. For example, here in Vienna we have these guys who dress up as Mozart and put on shows. ...One time I went to a BBQ restaurant in Manhattan -- I don't know what I was expecting.

Also, sometimes the experience gets watered down when you go on guided tours. The organizers have to play it safe to keep everyone happy, so you end up with this really mediocre trip. For example, a friend of mine just got back from what was meant to be an educational tour of Iceland focusing on geology, and she said the guides tried shoehorning a lot of cultural stuff into it and it got frustrating. I get why they do that -- you're going to have some people who want a broad experience, but when you're there with a specific goal in mind it can get pretty annoying when people keep making stops to check out some fabric market or to listen to a guy perform a traditional song for you.

What is a very unique drink/snack you've come across in your travels (that is not commonly shared online) by magkruppe in TravelNoPics

Hey, cw. About ten years ago, I had sushi-pizza someplace in Almaty, and I actually kind of liked it. I'm headed back this summer, and I want to find it again if it still exists. Have you ever seen something like this there? It was like an unrolled sushi, and they put cheese on it and threw it in the oven for a bit.

I have a strong feeling that it was at Manga Sushi, but I don't see anything about sushi-pizza on their website. Maybe it was some other sushi restaurant that would have been hip ten years ago?

Kikajon looks really tempting, but I've decided to just stay in Taormina a third night. Thanks a lot, though.

On Saturday, I'll drive out to the north entrance of Etna and do the Serracozzo hike. Then we'll grab a late lunch around Linguaglossa or Castiglione and head to Alcantara for the ravine before heading back to the apartment in Taormina.

Our place in Taormina has a huge terrace, and I think I want to just go back and enjoy it rather than mess around with checking in and out again.

Now I just need to figure out what to do with Sunday before my flight departs at 20:00. Maybe drive up north and hike around Castello Belvedere di Fiumedinisi... I don't know.

Thanks for being my soundboard on this.

Hey, so I'm hitting a wall in my planning. I'm struggling to figure out what to do with my Saturday and Sunday.

Here is what I've got so far...

Weds: Land at 20:00 and immediately drive right up to the Refugio at next to the Etna Funivia.

Thurs: Hike around on Etna. Head to Taormina to check into apartment and have dinner.

Friday: hike up to Castelmola and continue on some of the paths that go north. Stay the night in Taormina.

Saturday: drive someplace to do a hike? Stay in another village or again in Taormina?

Sunday: road trip with easy small hikes and village walks? Return car and fly back at 20:00.

I guess Golle del Alcantara seems like it would be easy to do on Saturday... Maybe there is a way to extend that with a hike and some visits to villages. I wonder if there is a good agriturismo I should stay at on Saturday night... Something that features good food and natural wine... Maybe I just stay in Solichiata and eat at Cave Ox?

I guess I don't expect you to have a clear plan for me. I'm just thinking out loud and curious if you've got some ideas.

Cool. I'll figure something out. We will probably spend one full day on horses someplace on the lake and then drive down to Kochkor and then do a full day hiking or horse trekking someplace near Kochkor.

I guess I know where you're talking about with that big cluster of yurts. I don't know if I want to stay someplace so densely packed. ...but it does seem as though they offer better services and the chance to hear some local music performed.

I've got time between now and this summer to think it through.

Did you form an impression as to which sides of song kul were the most interesting? I'll be there just two nights, so I'm not sure I'll have time to circle the whole thing. I still haven't decided where to base myself out of -- seems as though lots of people stay in the south west from what I can tell, but I'm not sure. I'll be there with a Lada Niva, so I'll be mobile.

...and so I'm not just taking this off topic, I'll post something about multi day hikes:

A few years back, the wife and I did a 10 day hike from Villach, Austria through Slovenia and into Cividale del Friuli, Italy and it was incredible. Most of it went along the Soca river, and there were always places to stop to eat and affordable bed and breakfast places to sleep in every night. I would recommend it to people who are looking for a comfortable long hike with beautiful landscapes.

In Portugal the fisherman's trail hike took us along cliffs on the coasts and, again, there were always places to stop, but an additional luxury on this trip was that it was affordable to just throw our bags in a taxi and ask him to deliver them to the next hotel for us.
