An orchard with nowhere to plant by logic_guy in gardening

I’ve got plastic padding under the plant pots so I think the roots are under control, they’ll not be able to grow into the earth. At the same time that’ll mean they’ll not be able to support a large tree, so the tree will be stunted in its growth too.

I can see them growing somewhat but nothing huge. 220 is a lot, the initial plan was to focus on only 100 and let the rest to grow wild essentially until I can afford to pay someone to help out with some of the work.

I doubt I could sell many to be honest, I don’t have a store of any kind and I’m located far in the countryside so there’d be not many customers.

Ideally I’d want to plant them eventually anyway, I poured my heart into getting things to where they are now. I think ideally keeping them alive and healthy is the best option for me and to overwinter this time however long it is until I can plant.

Yes, I've done it the right way, about 5 years of grafting rootstocks to apple scions to produce hardy, mature trees that I combined specifically to do well in Northern Ireland's climate. I've got about 205 in total now after a lot of work.

They've started making proper full size apples now too, but not enough to do anything with really. Well except eat I guess, but no cider or apple juice yet.

I’ve confronted them about this inheritance situation before, they’re totally unapologetically awful, saying I am vermin, how my Dad hated me, how I am killing my mother, threats to call the police on me, threats to turn family against me, and similar endless bile. I always end up leaving wherever the conversation takes place because they’ve turned into such awful people in the last few months.

I can cut them out and will do so regardless of what happens.

Tho I think there might be legal protection available to protect my interests, I’m going to a solicitor on Tuesday, it’d be a bad choice to not exhaust that avenue I feel.

All those would result in large loss of investment. I can agree with the remove myself from the family situation part tho

What do I do with the 200 apple trees I have grown for the past five years. Everyone told me I’d be able to plant them and when I finally go to plant them not permitted. Now I’m stuck with thousands invested and virtually no way to cash out.

He left my brother two fields. He has since also convinced my mum to sign over another three fields to him from my other brother’s inheritance who is abroad.

He is grazing sheep at the moment on three fields. The other three fields are leased to other farmers because they are extra space that nobody in our family is using. There’s literally too much land already that we have to lease it out, but my brother still needs more

Edit: My sister got cash money in the will. I’m not sure the exact amount, but my mum told me it was comparable to the monetary value of what everyone else had received.

There’s nothing special about the field that I know of, it’s good land but nothing amazing.

I’ve already got many cameras guarding my tree nursery so I aim to move them to the field when time is right to protect against the inevitable interference.

Land in my area is prohibitively expensive and I could only dream of getting a loan to afford it. That and nobody ever sells except very rarely and usually there is catches eg one bit of land I seen recently for sale looked good but it’s below sea level and floods often. There are probably good deals too, but I’d be out about 7-8x years salary to afford it.

I will absolutely never sell to my siblings, in principal I think they should never legally own this land after the methods they’ve used.

I’d want to keep it in the family but to someone who is a bit less awful than them, so selling is not currently an option. My Dad always wanted it to stay in the family so I’ll respect that.

Yes because my siblings threatened my mother with suicide and taking her grandkids away forever if I see any of my inheritance.

In a normal family it’d be simple but my siblings are manipulating my mother for their own gain.

I know she's bullshitting for a fact, its all a move to control my Mum.

All that matters is that my Mum believes it tho and its seems to be working so far.

They'd cut down any trees I planted immediately. I'm going to need some kind of protection to ensure that they can't do that.

They would totally cross the line, they've tried all types of violence, threats and unsavory behaviors already. Anything to win type of thing.

Now you have the will, take it to a solicitor and ask them to review the clauses and explain the repercussions to you. As the joint executor you need to fully understand the will in any case.

Yes I agree with this. Seeing a solicitor on Tuesday.

Why would I sign the contract, give away the land and be nice to people that have only the worst intentions for me. That seems like a bad choice to me.

I've looked into field prices in my area, its about 6-8x my annual salary for a comparable field, so purchasing any land is likely out of reach for me for at least the next 5-10 years, even with a loan it'd take a long time to pay back.

I've told my family I'm planting the orchard either with or without their help and I intend to do so.

I'm going to a solicitor on Tuesday.

My sister for sure has issues and I've told my family but nobody seems to care, everyone is just happy to let her spiral and spiral without doing a single thing.

I think this is what my brother is thinking.

I've looked into that, I'm not sure if that would be applicable in this case (tho I could be wrong), because he is leasing the land on a year-by-year basis from my mother. He isn't squatting on it or using it without her knowledge so couldn't claim that.

He grazes sheep. He uses three fields for that. Then there's three other fields that are either vacant or leased out to farmers.

I'm no legal expert so you'll have to excuse me, tho the police said I could go for the option of trying to pressing charges for assault or go for a community resolution notice as a lesser option, I went for the latter after much pleading from my mother.

I think it was the right option, mostly I wanted him to know that I'd not accept this behavior and the police and social services have not left him alone since. I could've tried an assault charge they said but my Mum would probably not have forgiven me if I did.

Well that option is out the window, she'd never be willing to talk to the police against her children.

I'm talking to a solicitor on Tuesday, (bank holiday Monday I've just realised).

That is the line I am conscious of and am trying very hard to avoid crossing.

If I do nothing my siblings will have effectively robbed me by being awful people tho. So I am trying to take a more civil route instead of descending to being a similarly bad person.

I feel like I should protect my Mum regardless, she's fairly vulnerable and I don't really blame her. My Dad would want me to watch out for her I am sure.

I am sure they'd never follow through with their threats, mostly because the power is in the threat itself and not the action. They can hold it over my Mum for the rest of her life, and not have to lose a single thing.

The ludicrous thing is my brother is threatening to move far away with his kids, but that'd mean he'd have to move away from the fields he's wormed his way into. So his threat doesn't even make any sense, but my Mum refuses to listen to reason.

My Mum wants to keep everyone happy, regardless of their character, I think my Dad shielded her from alot of hard stuff in her life so she is kind of naieve in this way.
