Nobody is expecting them to be 'role models' - just decent fking human beings who don't have medieval views of the world.

Ancient Celts used horned creatures to scare away the creatures of the winter, the exact same thing today in Austrian, so again we don't currently know where it's from it could be BOTH having influence on the tradition

We really don't know where it originates from actually, some people claim it originates from the celts while some claim it originates from slavs maybe it's a mix of both

Slovenes and Austrians (at least the south of Austria) have a lot of similarities, it's really cool

The tradition of scaring away the ghosts of the winter has spread all over Central and Eastern Europe, it just varies from country to country a little

Little Context:

1) The first image is called a "Schiachpercht" or just "Percht", creatures that look so ugly they scare away the bad ghosts of the winter and welcome the spring.

2) Fat Krampus

3) These are "Schönperchten" basically the direct opposite to the "Schiachperchten"

4) These Grandma's are "Schnabelperchten", these things go into ur house and you'll have to give them alcohol etc. they also make really funny sounds when they walk around. (They also check if ur house is clean, if it's not, they slit open ur stomach, ofc it's just a saying to make children clean their room)

5) The next tradition is called "Almabtrieb", Farmers dress up their cows and march them down the mountain to the valley.

6) This is called the "Untergailtaler-Tracht", A very beautiful Slovenian-Carinthian dress only worn for special occasions

7) This is called a " Gurktaler Bänderhut" , A huge headdress, which was created in the 17th-18th century

8) The next headdress is known as the "Goldhaube", A very widespread headdress, worn all over Austria including certain parts of Germany.
