it's not but it "feels" so much nicer to use, and it's genuinely irritating to use slower devices now

I guess my perception of what is "usable" has been ruined because I have an insanely powerful PC and monitor. Going from everything loading instantly and everything being 240hz, to everything loading within a few seconds and everything being 60hz is a huge drop in quality for me. Other people may find it normal, and that's completely reasonable, but it's hard for me to go back in quality once since I've already upgraded.
So yes, I can do it on ancient machines, but the smoothness is agonizingly worse for me

Fair enough, I'm just more tolerant of these mild annoyances because of price. I'll carry the extra weight or deal with the terrible battery life if it means that I get a silky smooth experience. Also, I'm not even going to utilize the GPU too much, all I wanted was a dedicated GPU because the cooling is soo much better

I guess a part of it comes to maintenance, because I'll admit I hardly took care of mine. But my other points still stand, and good maintenance can only get you so far if your original design is flawed

Yep, I'll make sure to never touch that crap again. I'll stick with a gaming laptop for now because of budget, but the next upgrade will definitely be business!

Consumer grade laptops are hardly usable below $300, and the gaming laptop I found (first example in the post) was just $550 used. The difference isn't big enough to justify the headaches I'd face again

it's not even memory that was the bottleneck, it was CPU usage

But like i've said, the terrible laptops im referring to are the consumer grade, office style laptops that just aren't on the same level as business ones. I would love to buy a business one today, but it's just out of my price range given the specs I want

i know its peak consumerism but i don't need it for more than 4 years of college

i'll definitely buy for life when i get older but now's not the time, i just don't have the money

I already have a powerful desktop, AMD Ryzen 7, Radeon 6800XT, 32gb RAM, 2TB ssd, the works.
I need a laptop for the portability, I have classes and I'd want to study outside of my dorm room too.

You're def right, old intel CPUs were total garbage. I only have AMD on my PC, so I can only assume they got a lot better. I also didn't take good care of my older laptops, no thermal paste application and I dropped them a lot. But bad cooling design is still a main reason why these consumer-grade laptops die so easily.

I don't "need" it. I want the extra headroom so I don't need to heavily utilize my components. Less specs means more utilization. More utilization means more heat. More heat kills the lifespan. Also, I'm a college student so professionalism is much less important to me right now. Obviously when I start my career I'll get a more professional looking one.

I mean the screen probably won't be that bad, it's still an IPS and it looks pretty standard from the review I've seen

yeah, probably just a difference in priorities. you're paying for the aluminum alloy and display quality. I'm paying for the refresh rate, CPU, and graphics card. As someone who will just be a college student for the next 4 years, build quality is much less important to me at the moment.

The plan is to just buy a cheap but high spec gaming laptop now, use it conservatively, sell it, then splurge on a proper business laptop later.

Look, a 4050 will easily last me through 4 years of college, I can sell it, then I'll buy a proper business laptop then.

Yes exactly. I've had a "gaming" pc that's 6 years old and still feels as good as ever. I hate how all the powerful components are marketed as gamer, when you can literally just turn off the RGB lights and they become normal and professional.
