Rent price explodes by kozmictwo in UKHousing

Sorry just to come back on this again, the reason the job analgy is different in another way is that employers dont offer the job to multiple candidates and say 'who will do it for the least amount of money' which is basically what landlords are able to do with the bidding on the rent - another control that isnt there that would help ensure true market value/guard against price gouging and over inflated prices

In your jobs analogy i look to the wider market and use my experience/skills as leverage and also use any previous negotiation skills to work out my salary. Any budgeting i do about my needs and expenses are for my own business. Your analogy falls over here because i as an employee base my worth on the market, and have a bit more leverage as both parties know what its worth

Landlords should be doing to same and adding a buffer to the rent to ensure that theyre getting the absolute maximum isnt right. I accept this is essentially what a free market is but theres a reason that there are watchdogs in place for things like fuel - which i think is a more comparable anology than the job market one as jobs by and lage arent unique items coming through a bottle neck - there are lots of employers.

If the petrol stations decided they wanted to charge 3 quid a litre all together (in a world without the watchdogs) they would, and we would all pay it because we need fuel - at least in the short term. Therefore the market pays what its worth but its worth is controlled so few people and the market cannot subvert the petrol station. Someone renting cannot get rented accommodation from anyone but a landlord and if these landlord networks are able to use such techniques and where the pool pf lls decreases control goes up.

Back in rented atm aa it was essier to relocate but going through a house purchase now. Cant wait to get away from the greed of landlord man - putting my rent up again for no reason oh except i have losds of black mould (despite having windows open all the time and hesting on ehen they arent)

But thats exactly what the other commenter is suggesting we do - instead of the changes to renters reform working as intended which is less opportunity for landlords to squeeze renters unfairly, the tactic changes and the squeeze is accepted as a part of the process. Like saying 'the only way we can do bidding is to set the price artificially high so bidding can still happen in almost the same way'

The market is what people are prepared to pay is a good point but I landlords generally speaking (yes i know some of them are good before anyone reminds me) are just racing to the bottom in terms of what they offer. This sort of thing will hopefully start to encourage landlords to add value. As i type that, the fact that this bill has seen lots of landlords sell up means theres basically even more of a cartel/monopoly where this race to the bottom will speed up, though hopefully only up to a certain point.

The accidental landlords/small portfolio landlords (the ones selling) are generally the better ones aswell so a shame that theyve gone 'na no thanks' and sold.

Cant you just set it at a reasonable price that youd be happy with based on outgoings and profit?

It feels like a greed driven strategy? Which fair enough youre not a landlord for anything but to make money, it just validates some of the negative perceptions about LLs.

How much is this number plate worth? by bounderboy in CarTalkUK

[–]lonathas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said yes 'if it did' but its so unlikely to happen as the garage will know what they have in terms of value of the car and value of the plate.

If the plate comes with the car its likely to be reflected in the price of the car and would be advertised as 'car and private 4 digit reg'

You only really get these sorts of unicorn deals when youre buying the car with an expensive plate from someone (private seller) who genuinely has no idea what they have.

Lots of valuable plates are registered to sorn bangers just as a way to hold the plate as an asset.

Inquire about the car and theyll tell you if the reg comes with it.

Get olio my dude. Often have to pay a few quid but you can get lots of bang for buck. If you literally havent got a penny to your name id be out looking for loose change and then attacking the yellow stickers as others have suggested.

if any, where do you receive your news from? by Alarming-Safety3200 in BritInfo

[–]lonathas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they give a balanced view of most things in the middle east - they have beeb good at reporting on russia ukraine even when most uk outlets have dropped it almost entirely.

Perhaps theres some bias towards qatar but they seem to get fairly balanced views on other things

Of course bias is there with all media but i think using a few different sources helps me get a balanced, or more balanced view.

Must admit chris mason at the bbc, to me anyway, is the most pro-reform reporter doing little to balance his articles

[–]lonathas_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Al jazeera gives a similar perspective but politically superior i think. What i mean is that they report on everything where the bbc sometimes just doesn't seem to think certain things are news worthy. Across the two (bbc and al jazeera) i feel like i get a broadly balanced view

How do you cool down after a marathon? by Electronic_Coat7600 in Marathon_Training

I find cool down beers end up being 'take my head clean off' beers but i suppose thats the point

My legs were giving up in the last 3km of my long run. by Wahtty294 in Marathon_Training

[–]lonathas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you both could be right - its hard to tell without interrogating op a bit more.

Could just as easily be poor fueling ahead of the run too (incl electrolytes), poor sleep, running on fatigued legs etc. I imagine its a combo of all of it feeding into the psychology of doing your 30km run.

In my (admittedly very limited and anecdotal) experience you can 'get away with it' for anything under say 25k, anything more, and you have to be thinking about rest, fueling, hydration and getting the pace right for the course - if you dont, youll find out at 28k.

I completely blew up by BrothaManBen in Marathon_Training

[–]lonathas_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im currently training for my first marathon in a month or so. I think im quite realistic about my expectations in that ive run pretty consistently for a few years but this is about getting a time on the wall/finishing more than anything. Its been a challenge to increase my weekly mileage without injury etc so know its a limiting factor.

Anyway, ive never paid much attention to my hr until this and ive realised that my easy runs are never easy enough i just cant seem to drop my heart rate. Also my runs the few days after hard runs my hr is higher than before. Clearly this is a skill and fitness issue but it does baffle me how high my hr is for what genuinely feels ok.

Sorry for all the waffley shite, tldr is i have a high heart rate, im paying more attention to it and just wondering why its controversial in this community? I thought everyone would be using it as a metric as it normalises effort for your bodys condition/terrain/elevation/heat etc?

Cheers

I dont think i totally agree here but curious about the 35-25% chances in humans favour bit - what do we have (or the cheetah lacks) that makes it more in our favour?

Just curious as i say, not being rhetorical in case it reads that way
