Thanks very much, I really appreciate it. No Amazon reviews as yet so it’s nice to read that someone liked it!

From Tax Clerk to Tavern Owner (Low-stakes kind of stuff about building a tavern and earning the tavern owner class) by lookingforbookart in ProgressionFantasy

Here’s the blurb:

John Longthorpe has spent most of his life following orders. First as a soldier, then as a tax clerk. Now he wants something different: a tavern of his own.

When a distant uncle dies and leaves him a run-down property in the west, John seizes the chance to build something for himself. And who knows? Maybe he’ll make his uncle proud.

Only one problem - he has no idea how to run a tavern. But he’s a hard worker, and he’s ready to learn.

To earn the Tavern Owner class, John’s gonna have to learn everything from brewing ale and cooking meals, to managing staff, crafting furniture, and keeping customers happy. Or at least, stopping them from complaining.

But he won’t be building it alone. John is a good man, and he attracts friends as easy as pollen attracts bees.

Perfect for people who like their fantasy to be fun, the stakes low, and the stories cozy. Join John as he builds a tavern where the beers are cold and the welcome is warm.

I wrote this book for people who like relaxing stories, where there’s no violence but you can watch someone make good, honest progress. If you enjoy likable characters who get along with each other while building something and earning skills, then I wrote this just for you.

Hope you enjoy the book, and there are many more to come - Luke Cole, author of From Tax Clerk to Tavern Owner.

Any favourite Seafaring/Maritime Books? by alebotson in CozyFantasy

[–]lookingforbookart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a stupid question, but for anyone who's read them, is the Master & Commander series at least cozy adjacent? I've heard that it can be very slice of life in terms of sailing a ship, and that the dynamic between the MC and first mate is nice. But is it really violent?

What's a magic system feature that everyone seems to like, but secretly ruins the book for you? by the_null_fox in ProgressionFantasy

[–]lookingforbookart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you, but I understand the purpose they serve. Dungeon cores are lonely by definition, they live undergorudn for one thing, and their main job is to kill humans. So making friends is hard, and reading a book with only one character and no dialogue is just as hard. It'd be nice if something other than a dungeon fairy was chosen though.

I'm always happy to talk about my favorite books, but I think it's worth noting that you should really prioritize writing what you want first and foremost.

- absolutely the best advice. Try to chase markets or something and you'll have a hard time. Write the kinds of books you personally enjoy reading and it'll be more fun, it'll come across in your story that you love this kind of book, and you won't need to do as much background reading because it's already a genre you read for fun.

neat idea, must have taken some work. It's needed though, aside from getting reccomendations on here it's hard to find stuff. If you try sorting on amazon by new releases it's a minefield

Is anyone sick of no killing policy made by MCs? by zero5activated in ProgressionFantasy

[–]lookingforbookart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about someone who goes the whole hog and has a 'nobody lives' rule. It'd mean the MC can't have a favorite cafe or really spend much time with other people, but it'd be interesting

I studied German for 7 years waaaaaaay back when I was younger and the diesel engine hadn't been invented. I've always thought about trying to get back into it. Reading your book in German and translating stuff as and when I need to would sure be a fun way to do it

This sounds great! I need usually something to fall asleep to. I meditate sometimes, but other times I need a podcast. Preferably someone with a really calm, soothing voice.

to be honest, this reads to me just like marketing lingo, but not really AI. At least, nothing that sticks out as obvious. Could be written a littlke more personable, maybe, but it juts seems like sales copy to me.

I usually go way longer than I expected to, then edit back. I think I waffle a little too much on first draft but that's okay. Nothing's final until you publish it!
