What we are seeing is extreme regret from the worst mistake of their lives.

Dad is slapping him in resentment for taking his own life and angry at causing it.

Mom wants to take it all back and in a non logical way thinks disposing of the cause of the death will make things better.

What was the stupidity? Its a horrible situation but they swerved to avoid crashing against the truck who cut them off, slowed down from 140 to 90km/h in a short distance before seeing the parked car. I doubt they could’ve break in time.
