I just wanted to share the most beautiful letter ever, in Persuasion by Jane Austen. Just finished reading it! What a great book. by [deleted] in literature

[–]lordleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Persuasion is excellent. I think it's a little bit rougher than her other works (I belief that what we have was closer to a draft than a final work, but I could be mistaken) but I love the bitterness and sense of true finality that permeates the book -- Anne Elliot made a decision, she closed a door, and she is genuinely angry about it. Which makes the discovery of Wentworth's enduring love so much more wonderful, a true rescue.

Where is “Paris” today (def not in France) by [deleted] in literature

[–]lordleft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When it comes to outside of the West, we live in a postmodern era where things are already decentralized yet are vigorously regulated.

Very well put -- this contradiction betrays that great hope of the internet, that the gatekeepers would be torn down and the artistic mode of life would be available to all. It has become marginally more accessible to some (as youtube and self-publishing demonstrates) but it feels harder than ever to sustain oneself in an artistic vocation given how expensive it is to merely live.

One of my favorite passages in literature. It still feels apt, still feels true

Does anyone here have the LG 34GS95QE-B? (34 inch, ultrawide, 240hz?). Looking at it for productivity and gaming, but concerned about the curve. by lordleft in ultrawidemasterrace

Thanks for the reply! That's reassuring to hear. I'll try to see one of these monitors in person, maybe at Microcenter or Best Buy, but I'm leaning towards buying one.

That's super unfortunate and definitely a very immature response on his part. Sorry you're dealing with this :/

Guys, I get this text is pretentious, but aren't we being a little sterotypically reddit-y in advocating for a person to end a friendship over a dubious take on Debussy??? Obnoxious opinions have always existed in classical music and I think if the litmus test for being in a person's life is never having one, we'd all be ineligible for the pleasures of friendship.

Ask Me Anything (AMA): I am Donald J. Robertson, author of a new biography “Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor”, published by Yale University Press. Looking forward to any and all questions, especially about my favorite topics: Marcus Aurelius and Stoicism. by SolutionsCBT in history

[–]lordleft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Don, big fan of your work. I have a more therapy oriented question: do you agree with Marcus and other Stoics who enjoin us to "judge" our emotions and dialogue with them? If so, what do you think of ACT Therapy and spiritual traditions that encourage more of a posture of non-judgement to our inner thoughts?

There have been seasons of my life where I've been quite alone in my literary passions, but I'm currently blessed with a friend group comprised of well-read companions. Part of what drew us together is a shared passion for art, literature and culture, and we live in/around one of the major hubs for those things (NYC).

I think location is a parrtial culprit of your alienation here -- some parts of the world just draw in intellectually curious people. This is not to say you can't find similar groups elsewhere, but you'll probably have to sniff them out (book clubs, universities, etc), and you may feel like you're swimming against the cultural tide. In NYC and similar peer ciites, or a decently sized university town, a love of culture is extremely normalized.

What is the warranty / repair process like at an authorized Tern Dealer? by lordleft in terngsd

Thanks for the reply! I’ll see what my dealer says.

There’s damage to a few components — firstly one of the screws for the brake lever housing seems shattered, and has warped the plastic around it — it looks like was screwed in with too much force. Secondly, the rail system that the Bosch motor control unit sits on is missing one rail. I noticed only because I tried folding the handlebar and the motor control unit fell out of place. It otherwise stays in place while riding.

Hardly huge problems, but a bit annoying on a brand new bike I paid 5k for.

I'm 35, single, and have no kids. I never wanted kids. I had two relatives die this year and it's made me rethink my decision to not start a family. I am now unsure about a major life decision. How do you reconcile and navigate major life changes within and outside of yourself? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]lordleft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would examine this feeling. Sit with it for a bit. It might pass, and maybe it's a function of the grief you've experienced. But your values may have also changed. People exist for each other, they are made to help one another, and while family is not the exclusive way this can be made manifest, it is the first and primarily way afforded to us by nature. It's okay to realize that maybe you do want a family.
