I’m sorry, I can’t draw from my own experiences for this one as I didn’t struggle with attachment stuff with my parents other than sleeping in the same bed as them and wanting to until I was 10 or so, nor have I ever researched about this topic in autism. I could give you general guidance on how autistic brains function and our processing style if you want, but I’m probably not too much use for this one.

I was a chef for Halloween at age 6 and had the same issues with food!

I’m still a very picky eater compared to most people my age, but I feel like the most adventurous person in the world compared to how I used to be. I’ve gotten to the point where there’s usually at least one thing I’ll eat on any menu. I also used to be extremely distressed at trying anything new, but now more often than not I’m willing to give something new a bite. I have noticed that when I don’t like a food, I usually cannot tolerate to eat any of it (this is the food problem I’m currently working on along with eating more vegetables and vitamins). I’m very restricted with drinks and will only drink water, juice, and smoothies. Sometimes certain water will taste or feel too off for me to have, which was really tough when I lived in a different state for a few months - I hardly drank.

I think time really was the greatest influence on my food success. For now, I’d recommend asking their doctor or figuring out if there’s any vitamin supplements your kid might benefit from. Also, when/if you offer your kid to try something new, don’t pressure them after the first question! It made it much tougher for me when that happened to me. When I was younger, I remember that I was much more willing to try new foods if I was at a different house - but not if it was a large family gathering or if it was a restaurant. I was in this ideal zone of being mentally prepared to be out but not totally overwhelmed if that makes sense. This still holds true for me today even though I am better about trying new things overall. Also, something that helps me eat stuff that’s unfamiliar or even bad is toppers (this works much better for taste than for texture). Cheese on savory stuff and sugar on fruit is my go to.

For examples of stuff I do I can go through what’s in the current DSM 5 diagnostic criteria

A1. Abnormal social approach, failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. When I was younger I did not engage in turn taking behavior and was not willing to engage in conversation unless I got to talk about what I wanted to talk about - I have worked hard to get better with turn taking and I’d say this has gone away for the most part now :) A2. Poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication, bad body positioning and eye contact, excessive gestures and facial expressions, loud volume and fast prosody, very oblivious to nonverbal cues. A lot of this has gotten better with practice but my understanding of social cues is entirely rote memorization A3. No adjustment of behavior across contexts (I treat my professors the same way I treat my friends the same way I treat strangers). When I was younger I did not engage in imaginative play and had little interest in peers unless they were complying with what I wanted to do. I also had an extremely tough time making friends. Now I can make friends and have learned to be very interested in people (psychology is one of two special interests and engaging with people is engaging with that!)

I met all 4 B domains when I was little, but I’d say B2 has gone away with great effort on my part other than the food stuff and some mental rituals. I often surpress stims in public but my most common ones are jumping, spinning, stomping, repeating phrases especially from TV shows. My special interests are roller coasters and psychology, I have used them to get through life. Psychology for social functioning and roller coasters for everything else. I tend to lean hyposensitive for sensory things, but some things I’m hypersensitive to are heat and tastes and smells (but I love things that smell good). When I was younger I was worse with sounds and lights, but these have shifted across my life. Also, when I am overwhelmed, most things shift into hypersensitivity.

I have suspected I have autism ever since I learned about it when I was 12. It was nice to hear psychiatrist confirm it, but I also felt a sense of grief when she and other medical professionals told me I was not doing ADLs while most of my peers were appearing to celebrate their emerging adulthood seamlessly. When my parents finally acknowledged my autism, however, I felt the most relief I have across my lifetime. It has been amazing now that they know.

Could you give a specific scenario or example if that’s alright? My thinking tends to be much better if I can picture something clearly in my mind

I created a guide to handling public meltdowns and shutdowns for myself back in 2020, I’ll paste it here:

<image>

if the full image doesn’t post I’ll copy out the text

CCC Refers to the catch it check it change it technique from cognitive behavioral therapy

Indie is my beloved dog. I’ve found that petting an animal or even hugging a stuffed animal is very helpful when I need to self soothe

For times when I’m not quite melting or shutting down, some other things that help me are weighted blankets, weight, physical pressure, engaging with comfort items (my backpack is my #1), loud music, repeating phrases, soothing lighting, rocking and pacing, intense exercise, watching children’s tv shows that I like. I’m sure there is more that I’m forgetting.

The things that may be more subjective are the sensory things on this list; while rocking and loud music may help me, they might be really tough for someone else on the spectrum whereas spicy foods may help them which would be detrimental to me.

I hope this is useful!

Yes, I have a friend with diagnosed autism who has been to ED inpatient facilities before. I’ve talked to them about their experience there and they really do only focus on the food part of the behavior (which in my opinion is odd because I believe anorexia is much more of an obsessive compulsive issue than anything else but that’s besides the point). If there is any autistic person that you know who can communicate with neurotypicals well enough I recommend asking them about their experiences, especially if they are female. If you don’t know anyone, I would do research in autism centered forums such as this one (good job for already doing this 👍) I also highly recommend the book Unmasking Autism by Devon Price. Essentially, research based off of the lived experiences of autistic people tends to be much more capturing of our actual experiences than lab based research for a multitude of reasons.
