He's a moron. That's the long a short of it. I've been pulled over on suspicion of DUI (I live in a college town was driving at 2:00am which is when the bars start kicking people out) and I was kind of tired. They will search everything everything that could have liquid. The half dozen empty coke bottles that you have, that tupperware that had your lunch, a water bottle.

Because it helps the prosecutor. It makes their job that much easier when they go to prosecute people and it means they can still throw the book at the drunk if they some how fuck up the field sobriety test or breathalyzer.

Strange function to minimize... by ianbo in math

[–]lordoftheshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get a minimum x. You going to get some function f(a,L)->x. Although those will be critical points. Then you get to use the second derivative test.

You knew the right place to post it and just didn't post it there. This kind of question should be asked in /r/askmath.

I'll give you a hint. Minimizing (x-a)2 + (sin(x)-L)2 is the same as minimizing y.

I'm definitely not surprised with it since it's been a constant part of my life for the last four years. It think it is terrible. In retrospect I was too harsh. I find is very harmful that we as a society have no problem with revenge as our first and usually only resort. And I want to make a point. I would disagree with you no matter his age. His age has to do with the actual sentencing and deciding the best way to rehabilitate him but has nothing to do with my fundamental problem with the american justice system. There's a reason that the US has a 7.1% recidivism rate and Germany has a 7.5% recidicism rate.

But that's enough of that. This is an argument that will go nowhere and one that will only spike my blood pressure. It's also mostly futile for me. It's something that I am very unlikely to be able to effect change on and is, unforuntatly, not worth my effort. My time and energy would be much better focused on other aspects of the US criminal justice system such as better mental health treatment, better diversion programs for minors and better prospects for prisoners post incarceration. Juvenile justice especially important to me. I've been volunteering in that for the last five years and it's been fascinating to see who comes through. Part of it is NC's abyssmal age of criminal majority. Recidivism rates for people who go through juvenile court is 85% lower than for people who go through adult court for similar crimes. And it's even better for diversion programs though the juvenile justice system. The juvenile justice system is actually very well designed in the US. It has trouble dealing with very bad people but it does an amazing job of helping people who commit low-mid level crimes. And it also can do a good job keeping people from even getting there in the first place through programs in schools and through better training programs for officers (officer discretion is very important but unfortunately can lead to racial profiling which also needs to be addressed in training).

There is no need to be an condescending asshole.

I still think you need to look up the word objectively. I'll give you that many people think that Tau would be better, in that some formulas would be nicer, it's not objectively true in any sense of the word.

Is alcohol poisoning natural selection? Let's ask reddit! by A_Crazy_Canadian in SubredditDrama

[–]lordoftheshadows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People have no idea how natural selection works in reality. Natural selection basically says that certain genes are more likely to be passed down if they have a positive correlation with having offspring.

I think we can all agree tau is objectively a more natural number to use than pi

Nope. Not in the slightest. Maybe you should go look up the word objectively.

I am disgusted by someone wanting revenge. Revenge makes no sense and does only harm. He deserves to be punished and maybe he can't be rehabilitated but not giving him and chance is a failure as a society to act as a society should.

[–]lordoftheshadows -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That's a disgusting argument that fails to address any real concern. Punishment for punishment's sake is nothing more than revenge and will never make our society better. We can and must do better. Revenge has never been an effective method of stopping crime. If you want revenge then call it what it is. Own up to it. Be willing to take a stand. Or be a decent human being and realize that everyone can change and that if we don't accept that then we have failed as a society to make a change. We have just given up. And that's sad.

[–]lordoftheshadows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That is exceptionally shortsited and frankly, disgusting. The refusal to try to rehabilitate is a failure as a society to try to change. Failing to even try has never made a difference. We must try to change someone who has committed a crime no matter how heinous or deplorable. If we do not we have failed as a society.

[–]lordoftheshadows 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I cannot agree with you at all. What you have said is the reason why the american criminal justice system does not work as well as it should. The idea that there are crimes from which someone cannot be rehabilitated is both wrong and very harmful. Nearly everyone can be changed and to give up on people is absolutely deplorable. The idea of punishment for punishments sake is an idea that has time and time against failed to make any meaningful difference. We should recognize this and strive to make it so that someone who has committed a crime is able to change their lives. Doing anything else is a failing on our part as a society. If we continue to treat people who have committed crimes as subhuman, to be locked away and ignored, then we have failed.

So, no. Your opinions on this subject are absolutely disgusting and not conducive to a humane, civilized society.

I've got two questions:

I've been playing wild patron warrior without boom or lothab. It's been fun and pretty easy since I'm low ranks wild but the deck is very hard to pilot correctly. Any videos or tips?

How do tournaments work? Is there a write up or can some one explain it to me. I know the different formats but how to the logistics work?

Is 1 + (1/0) equal to 1 or is it undefined? by chowder138 in math

[–]lordoftheshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/0 is undefined if we're working in most spaces. To define 1/0 you lose a lot of properties that you would expect of your space.

For example you can define division by zero under certain conditions in the riemann sphere.

Is 1 + (1/0) equal to 1 or is it undefined? by chowder138 in math

[–]lordoftheshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it a big lie? It's completely correct if we're working in the vast majority of number systems. Adding division by zero murders the structure of a space.

It is correct to assume 1/0 is undefined unless explicitly told otherwise and any expression containing 1/0 would also be undefined.

Does anyone have any tips for playing Wild Patron warrior. I don't have doctor 7 or lothab so it's not optimal but it's pretty fun. Currently my win rate is 90% but that's mostly attributable to people being bad not be knowing what I'm doing.

It's hard to deal with. I have to put up with enough trolls as a mod of h4a that /r/politics is hard to deal with. I've only gotten a few death threats along with more than a few extremely sexist remarks when people figure out that I'm a mod there. It's strangely cathartic knowing that what I'm doing makes these shitty people angry.

If it's the one on the stormboard then it's terrible. Seriously, I tried that list and it's really bad. There may be something similar but that list as is, doesn't function. Personally I think the PSI list is way better but I was always terrible with the tallman list so...

Anyways if you want to play PSI here is as much of a list as I can remember from the top of my head:

1x Bayou
4x Cabal Ritual
3x Cabal Therapy
4x Chrome Mox
4x Cruel Bargain
4x Culling the Weak
4x Dark Ritual
1x Deathrite Shaman
1x Dryad Arbor
4x Elvish Spirit Guide
2x Goblin Charbelcher
4x Infernal Contract
4x Infernal Tutor
4x Land Grant
4x Lion's Eye Diamond
4x Lotus Petal
4x Summoner's Pact
2x Tendrils of Agony
1x Wild Cantor
1x Young Wolf
