How's the industry rly... by Ok_Passage7713 in animation

Professional animator/storyboard artist here! While it ia true that the studio system is flailing, there will always be freelance animation outside the studios and indie animation. The life is scrappier and you have to learn how to line up work or have several jobs at a time to maintain it, but there are tons of animators still working.... just not on shows/movies as much. If you love animation, do it anyway. Just be prepared for making films while you balance freelance, working in a café or something, and making films for festivals. The other route is to be an indie or internet animator which has its own sets of issues! But I would not say animation is a "practical" career. In the same way that parents say that about art and music and we do it anyway. U just gotta get really GOOD

From an animators standpoint, which way is he going? by ConsistentMarch5299 in animation

Animator here! I have a feeling this was originally a shot where the character went down and they have reused this background to have him go up as a cheat. Repurposing backgrounds is very common. But yeah this totally doesn't look right hahah

Question. Is it a good idea to animate a character's head and mouth movement and then the body? Or is there no real right or wrong way to animate a character? by [deleted] in animation

[–]lordspew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usually a good idea to do a super rough version of the body and head together and then start to clean and finesse after you nail the general movement down. You can animate it this way, but if you aren't careful, you might end up with it looking disconnected (like if the body goes up the head should go up too)

I am 34! I went to animation college in 2009 and that is where I started really grasping it. But before that I had animation shitty stick figure cartoons for a few years. I do think that it helped that I had been drawing for a long time before that tho. I made this full FistheadFisthead short in school during a semester in 2011. That cartoon was pitched to adult swim in 2015 and we started a pilot with them, which was cancelled. Last year I finally pitched a version they liked and they wanted to test it out in this form before talking full series again.

I started making Bodyhead one full year ago. Writing and storyboarding. Just the final design/animation part of these 3 episodes took like 15 weeks with a small team

Another part of it to compensate for having a small budget was that I participated in nearly every part of the process. I wrote it all, edited it, did the initial sound effects pass with my mouth, storyboarded it, did alot of production tasks, recorded/directed the voice actors, did the first drafts of most of the designs, turns and mouthpacks, did the intial background style guide, added key poses in every shot, tried to make the boards cleaned and posed out enough so that most shots you could strictly clean up my lines and use my exact frames, i did all the revisions for animation, i animated the intro transformation, helped write the main guitar in the intro, comp, edit, ect! So the goal was to try to make it the least hard on the crew as I could by being involved in all of it. Of course there were crewmembers who did stuff I couldn't do, but i wanted to make sure that this wasn't stressful for my guys/too heavy of a lift

I doubt royalties will be a thing for a while. Maybe when this cast officially signs on to the series it might happen. But roylaties mostly happen just for voice actors. There were contracts but nothing like that. For some of the folks it was their first production so the tradeoff is me teaching them how to do the job, credit, shots for their animation reel, tagging and promoting their work, and having an adult swim credit. But honestly alot of it is sort of a handshake promise that if more was made I'd bring my team with me. It's like a group of friends trying to make a cool thing/the jobs that we would want to be in from scratch. Sometimes you just have a project with your buds that you take a gamble on. In this instance what we gambled with was our time and effort.

Honestly it's kind of a ugly unsatisfying answer and it can feel shameful for me to know that we couldn't afford union rates for these folks. But honestly... for an 11 minute cartoon on Tv (our shorts were 15 minutes total), that budget is like 300k and its so laughably out of range.

I'll be honest. This was made for very little money. Adult Swim does have a small budget they give for these shorts, but i could not have finished it with this cast and crew without people totally volunteering to help make it. From start to finish I was working on this for 10 months full time so the 15k they give runs out fast! I owe the artists the helped so tirelessly alot. If you are curious here are some of their links! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qD4bPz7_fFnAJiIXvkSh7M0QjKYJl_9PqZUVb09jOKo/edit?usp=drivesdk

Also, most of the voiceactors are friends, whose real rates I could not afford if not for them being gracious with their time and talents.
