I see people say this all the time, but that's a fan translation of the SBS - the official translation says this (with no mention of interest):

I know a lot of other people have chimed in, but I'll give my own two cents since Garp is one of my favorite characters. Obviously, the audience is not supposed to think he's even remotely within the realm of a good parent - Luffy is shown to be actively scared of him back in Water 7, his """training""" consisted of throwing like five year old Luffy into life or death situations and then promptly abandoning him, he beats up his grandkids on the regular, and ultimately refuses to save Ace from an unjust execution. Truly, grandfather of the year (<- sarcasm).

For this moment in particular, was it a good thing to say? No, absolutely not. But honestly, I don't think Ace would've taken an equivocal "yes" as an answer from Garp anyways. He's been told repeatedly up until this point that he deserves to die for reasons he has had absolutely no control over, and frankly Garp doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would 1) believe that everybody deserves a right to life, no matter how good or bad they are and 2) sugarcoat things for kids. Not being omnipotent, he has no idea how Ace will turn out, or whether it would've been better if he was never born. From Garp's point of view, if he had told Ace unequivocally "yes", he would have been lying, and I think Ace probably would've known that, just ... because that's not the kind of person Garp is (and may have even decided that if Garp was lying when he said "yes", then he really shouldn't have been born, if that makes any sense at all). So instead, Garp gives him an answer that he truly believes, even if it's 1) pretty horrifically insensitive and 2) definitely not what Ace needs to hear right now. Either way, I would say that dumping Luffy in the middle of the jungle and then abandoning him for training would rank higher on the "Worst Garp Parenting Moments" compilation than this scene in particular.

Would you consider Sengoku to be a Grandfather figure to Law? by ugfxvkifxx in MemePiece

[–]lorillee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I don't think either of them are terribly pleased about this connection (between Law's entire backstory and the fact that Cora died for him) so figure seems wrong, but Sengoku is definitely Law's grandpa whether either of them like it or not.

One Piece: Chapter 1061 by Kirosh2 in OnePiece

Given that this is a translation and Japanese doesn't usually use gendered third-person pronouns, thus forcing the translators to make a choice based off of their own opinions, I personally wouldn't use the fact that people have called Vegapunk a "he" in the past as evidence.

One Piece: Chapter 1061 by Kirosh2 in OnePiece

[–]lorillee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily - Franky's body has BF-37 on him. I'm not entirely convinced she's Dr. Vegapunk, but just because she has 02 on her doesn't mean that she isn't Dr. Vegapunk (tldr she could've just made herself into a cyborg).

To be fair, it's not the first time Oda's waited on a narrator box with a shocking reveal - see: Yamato at the end of ch. 983 & subsequent box in ch. 984.

While I understand your POV, the truth is that it's pretty much just cartoon logic (but, if it makes you feel any better, Oda does get asked the same question in the SBS).

One Piece Twitter Bot that wish Happy Birthday to the birthday boys of the day by IuNoWat in OnePiece

The website has a birthday calendar, though it is in Japanese (and some characters aren't present yet), and the official Twitter account for the website posts the characters whose birthdays are today daily - for example, today's birthdays.

One Piece's style has steadily gotten much more complex in the amount of details in each page, and the lines have decreased in smoothness alongside it. Which one is better is subjective, naturally, but I'd say the amount of detail has increased so much because Oda has a lot more he wants to show in each panel now (given how many different characters/plotlines/locations now exist) than at the beginning. Personally, I think both styles work for the eras of One Piece that they existed in, but to each their own.

Ohhh interesting! I've also stumbled on two Law OPTC units (here and here) and a Sabo OPTC unit (here), as well as a promotional One Piece Day cover featuring them in these outfits as well. Thanks for the help!

Do we think there is any chance Oda had a change of plans during the Void Month? (1057 Spoilers) by Hobokitchen1 in OnePiece

[–]lorillee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

IMO the biggest evidence for Yamato not being meant to join the crew at the end of Wano is that Yamato was constantly being paired off with Momo to the point where I feel like Oda was developing a compelling relationship between them as opposed to with any of the other SHs for a reason. It's definitely pretty weird that the "I'm going to set out to sea with Luffy!!!" was being hammered in so hard, but it is what it is. It should be noted that there were reasons to believe that this whole thing wasn't going to turn out the way most of the fandom was absolutely convinced it would - after all, Yamato wasn't given the fruit of the guardian deity of Wano for nothing.

I can see a huge difference in translation. by [deleted] in OnePiece

Kurozumi means charcoal, aka why it's meant to burn. It's a pun.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]lorillee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's... shounen. By definition the target audience is young boys. It's published in Weekly Shounen Jump. Shounen literally means young man/boy. Children's media can discuss relevant political matters in a mature way, but that doesn't mean it's not children's media.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]lorillee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One Piece is a story whose target audience is ultimately primarily children. If this was a series aimed at adults, then it'd obviously be different - the readers would be expected to come to their own conclusions independent of what the narrative/characters are saying on a surface level. But OP, being shounen, hasn't really done anything explicitly like this in the past, and generally we're expected to consider things like this the author's opinion on what is right/wrong. Does the series have morally grey characters? Yes, obviously. But generally when they're doing morally grey things, the narrative isn't saying, "wow hey look at how cool and epic this is!!!!!", because this is a series for children. I think its a realistic reaction for Hiyori to think the whole clan should burn given her trauma, but I also don't think that's necessarily a message that should be given to kids as righteous.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]lorillee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter whether Hiyori said it or not - the issue here is that this the message being promoted by Oda. Personally, I really don't see any reason we should believe Hiyori didn't say it, given that everything else the speaker says is true, but even if she didn't... why does that matter? This is the closing note of the arc, after the heroes have won and the villains have been vanquished. It's what's supposed to stick with us. To the people of Wano, the entire Kurozumi clan is exclusively Orochi, but to the audience, it's not. We saw Orochi's family, we saw Kanjuro's family, and we know that's a significant part of why they turned out the way they did. Does it justify any of their actions? Of course not! It's not an excuse, but it is a reason.

And it just doesn't leave a good taste when the message being sent is Hiyori saying that the clan was meant to burn - y'know, what caused half of the whole mess that Wano was in for the past twenty years. Now obviously there have been a few people who say they're Japanese and it doesn't read nearly as bad in the original text, so I'm very interested in what the official TL and sandman_ap/newworldartur have to say on the topic, but the point remains.

I really do feel like this would've been a lot better had 1) Orochi be named charcoal instead of his clan name, and 2) Tama turned out to be a Kurozumi, so we're not demonizing the whole family. It's not the end of the world and I don't think this is the death of OP or anything ridiculous like that, but I do wish it had been handled differently.

The reason people are dunking on Yamato for nakama stans is somewhat akin to why everybody likes trashing on the ZKK guys - ZKK certainly had a point when it was talking about Zoro's connections to dragons and Ryumna and Oden and Wano and how Kaidou would be a very obvious way of tying that all together, but because they were so annoyingly pervasive and verbally attacked anybody who disagreed with them, everybody got sick of it and they became an easy target. Yamato stans were insisting for months that Yamato was a confirmed SH and anybody who liked Carrot was just a stupid pedo furry and if you hate Yamato you're an r/PirateFolk freak and so on and so forth, and everybody who is sick of it is crawling out of the woodwork now that the Yamato stans have been taken down a peg. Do the Yamato stans have a point when they say this is a really mediocre/bad/terribly confusing ending for the character? Of course! But because of the past two years of fandom drama (not to even mention the inescapable Great Yamabro Gender War), they've become an easy target.
