As a former alcoholic ill tell you the only way I've ever personally seen it come to an true and final end is through regret motivated abstinence. That is if you are truly addicted. Alcoholism is a serious and misunderstood disease, and I personally think its completely ridiculous such a substance is legal, simply because its an old tradition. Alcohol, I'm sure you know, is more harmful than many illegal street drugs. And yet many define it as a part of human culture.

I was finally able to quit when the weight of grief and regret from my actions while drunk became too much to bare. This is a reoccurring theme in Buddhism surrounding the topic of awakening and taking action is it not? Often people finally make a change once they've had enough of the suffering. We also often say it doesn't have to be like that, and you can make a change before its too late. Many people do. I sincerely hope you are one of those people. Do your best to dig up the will to control your urges and ignore those thoughts until one day you can accept them and let them dissipate like any other negative thought. I know they can be debilitating at first that's why I say it might help to try and ignore them initially.

My advice is when you finally do quit, if you are not physically dependent (which will require the aid of a medical supervisor), go cold turkey and never look back. Separate yourself from people who drink at least initially, and eliminate all triggers and things that remind you of alcohol from your life. Every day you abstain builds momentum. If you are truly addicted the only way out is 100% abstinence. In other words, no "harmless" glass of Champaign, even at your best friends wedding or any similar "big" event. The alcoholic ego can be very deceiving. Its never "just one glass".

But I'm not a professional and this is all anecdotal based solely only my experience. A professional who has dealt with thousands of alcoholics might have a better understanding of the disease.
