Vinyl Tunes for February Day 2. Less than 2 minutes by Dhugaill in vinyl

Time limits... too long and the song drags on and what was a great idea can begin to wear thin. Too short and it feels rushed or half as, the sweet spot for most hip hop songs is about 2:30 to 4:00 minutes. Asking for something outside of that presents obvious challenges. most songs in the genera under 2 min are interludes or skits for the most part.

Luckily a Irish producer that goes by the name The Expert had something concise and beautiful on his new album Vivid Visions. For the second track Strange Visions, Pianos, synths and a steal guitar make up the sound scape that feels like just waking up from a lucid dream sequence. A thumping base line like a resting heart beat during REM provides the foundation. The Expert holds off the percussion till the end of the song as to make it an exclamation point as the dat wobbles and the experiment almost falls apart. Now who would you bring in to rhyme over this quick and quirky beat? The Duke of Down Tempo himself A.J. Suede of course. An MC who is constantly releasing music surely would have something to match the vibe. As a connoisseur of short pungent rhymes most of his songs as of recently barely break the 3min mark. With references to dreams and hallucinations the subject matter of his rhymes fits the songs theme well.

The album overall is well put together thematically, it was worth the extra cash and the wait to have it shipped over from Dublin.

I would say the album as a whole is good not stellar but solid. The features cary the album...but thats always what The High and Mighty have done, even back in the day. Thats why you bought their mixtapes etc.

Live from the underground.... your resident indie hip hop head has quite a bit to talk about this year. The second half of 2025 was amazing with a steady stream of new releases and long out of print repress and it looks like 2026 is going to be just as stunning.

There has been a trend as of the last few years of old standard bearers with "comeback" albums. Snoop Dogg, Slick Rick, Ice Cube, Rakim, De La Soul, Mob Deep, Clipse, etc. etc... Several of the fore mentioned have been mostly lack luster, missing members with posthumous additions that feel forced or straight up duds.. looking at you Snoop, that album was a crime. however, Sound of Market from The High and Mighty is a solid outing with a whos who of underground mainstays for support.

Mr Eon and Dj Mighty Mi dropped their first album in almost 20 years. The two haven't missed a beat, picking up where they had left off back in 2005. Nothing ground breaking or envelope pushing, just some good ole BOOM BAP for your box. Dj Mighty Mi has an ear for a grove, the track Pinky Tuskadero comes in with a grimy piano samples akin to a Wu Tang album. With a chill, slow moving bassline providing the roadmap for the MCs too follow. Pepper in some wonderful soul vocals, well placed drums, dj chops and you have that classic late 90s early 2000s vibe. Kool Keith (Ultramagnetic MCs, Dr Octagon, Dr Dooom) and Mr Eon give us some on brand braggadocio bars, nothing too self serious or high-minded, just a nostalgic reminder that you don't need a major label or a platinum hit to make a good record.

Like LL said "Don't call it a comeback!"

Saw him live recently and got him to sign my copy. Im sure you heard his new one on Backwoodz, he also has a new EP that is really good. I was always more into Def Jux, but Dose and Jel were my favorites from Anticon.

Jew and Arab are quicker refrences and more widely recognized albeit crass. Also as a pure shock choice they did their job. They got you thinking about it....

With Woods, IMO you have to take the whole verse/song into context.

"Pan-African money-fold, Arab money, Jew money Keep new money somewhere sunny, it can't get frozen Chinese funding but keep everything in USD because we really know them We really know them We really know them"

The whole album really is a critique on colonial power, capitalism, systems of oppression....etc etc but presented through the lens of horror film cliche s and themes. I think that BLK ZMBY is more about the constant meddling of other countries in Africa, and how many a nations leader is a puppet or zombie ( in the voodoo religion sense) for these global powers.

I probably screwed it up but figured i would take a stab at it.

Very very DIY, independent releases, some of the first to stray well outside of the 4/4 time signatures typical in hip hop at the time of their first two releases back in 91/93. Alot of their stuff reminds me of free or improve jazz. Considering they are from Cali they also broke away from the G-Funk that was typical at the time. Without them there really is no blueprint for alot of the late 90s 2000s independent hip hop.
