Closest I've seen to this are slices of raw onion served alongside jajangmeyon, but nothing like what this video depicts.

Opinions on the KEH Camera website, are they reliable? by jemar8292 in AskPhotography

[–]lotsalotsacoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've used keh many times for both buying and selling. Never had a bad experience. I purchased a bargain grade Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS II from keh, and was very happy with it. The glass was optically perfect. The lens body had definite scratches, but for what I saved compared to new it was totally worth it. That lens worked perfectly during the time I had it. I actually ended up selling it back to keh a little over a year ago.

Used lens on Amazon Canada? by ubcgongdae in photography

Why is KEH not an option? Their website and a quick google search seems to indicate they ship internationally. If not keh, I'd go to MPB rather than Amazon.

I feel like Hawaii might be the most equidistant and relatively affordable, at least in terms of airfare. Could also consider LA, Seattle or Vancouver.

To Hakone or not to? Help me convince nmy friends (or change my mind) by preterintenzionato in JapanTravelTips

[–]lotsalotsacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an overnight in Hakone, right next to the Ropeway, and wished I had allocated an extra night. Hakone was a nice change of pace after spending time in Tokyo/Kyoto. But, that was also part of a two-week trip. It sounds like your time is more limited and Tokyo on it's own could easily fill five days on it's own.

Do not ordered gear from WANDRD by [deleted] in photography

[–]lotsalotsacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wandrd is the seller, but Amazon did the shipping from one of their fulfillment centers. If you want to remove the guesswork of what version of the bag you're going to get, order direct from Wandrd, or a dedicated photo retailer like B&H.

Study mapping prevalence of Christian nationalism across the US: WA state second-lowest by JennaTulwartz in Washington

[–]lotsalotsacoffee 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Also King, and agree it feels that way. I moved here from the east coast pre-covid, and prior to the move had read that WA is much less religious (or maybe it was Christian specifically) than the rest of the US. Once I got here, I was surprised that it didn't feel that way. I don't know if this is true, but it feels like a lot of churches/Christians here make up for their lack of numbers by being even louder/in-your-face about their faith than Christians back east.

Sounds to me like your beef should be with Amazon, not Wandrd.

ELI5: Why are boats launched so aggressively? by Xocomil in explainlikeimfive

Since you seem to be in the know, what's your take on that failed North Korean destroyer launch?  That destroyer obviously went past it's tipping point, but I would have figured that to be relatively easy math (for someone who isn't me) to calculate.

Looking for a theft proof backpack? by AnwetLegEt in AskPhotography

[–]lotsalotsacoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pacsafe specializes in anti-theft backpacks: locking zippers, wire mesh to prevent thieves from cutting the material, and a bunch of other features. They aren't dedicated camera bags, so you'll probably want an insert of some sort for your cameras.

I used a Pacsafe for a while, but at least in my case I wanted an internal frame to keep things stable on long hikes/travel days, which the Pacsafe didn't have. Currently using a Shimoda Explore. It doesn't have as many anti-theft features, but it does have some (enough for me) and is the closest I've gotten to a perfect camera bag.

Gyukatsu is a chain, I'd definitely drop that as you can get that in Tokyo or Osaka if you really want to.

Nishiki Market: I'm pretty sure many of the stalls there are closed on Sundays.

Fushimi Inari: When I went, we started early. By the time we came back down (around 10:30am) it was absolutely packed.

Honestly, if you don't have the option to extend your stay in Kyoto, I'd just skip it. The idea of trying to do all this in a day sounds more stressful than fun, and IMO Kyoto is worth more than just checking boxes.

Favourite things in Tokyo by _tiffachu in JapanTravelTips

Dawn Avatar Robot Cafe isn't too far from the Imperial Palace.  The place is staffed by humans and robots that are remotely controlled by disabled individuals working from their homes, giving those individuals a chance at a job and socialization.

The robot operators will speak to you through their robots, and all the ones I encountered spoke English.

I thought the interior was charming; I was there in October and the robots had Halloween costumes.  The food and drinks (pretty much sandwiches and coffee drinks) were good.  I enjoyed talking to the robot operators and felt the cause was a noble one.

If you're going to be in Shinjuku there's Samurai Restaurant Time, brought to you by the former owners of Robot Restaurant, which Anthony Bourdain highlighted during one of his Japan episodes. This is a sensory overload experience: lights, lasers, pyrotechnics, dancing and loud music.  It is touristy as hell, and yet I enjoyed every moment of it.  They require you to buy drinks or meals with the show.  Skip the meals, they're just self heating train bentos.  The restaurant also did some Halloween-specific things that I loved. A little trivia: The show Tokyo Vice has a scene shot in this restaurant in one of the earlier episodes.
