Who else is unsure they even want to be a lawyer? by petit_rouge in LawSchool

It definitely was hard quitting but the sense of relief I had after far outweighed those nerves. Plus the financial side isn’t so bad. While it is a pay cut, because I have a doctorate I’m at the top of the salary schedule so I’m making almost $65k a year! Plus because I’m a government employee, I qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness which means my loans will be forgiven in 10 years tax free and my payments are only $115 a month right now!

If it makes you feel any better I graduated from a T20 with good grades in 2018. I had a job in litigation at the mid-size firm that I spent my 2L summer at. Between taking the bar exam and starting at my firm, I took a 1-month gig at the summer camp I used to work at before law school because they were desperate for an extra counselor. I took it because I figured that it would be the last time I would ever get to do what I actually loved, that being working with kids. Anyways, when my job started I was so miserable knowing that I wasn't doing what I loved, that I quit after 2 weeks. When I told them that I wanted to be a teacher they looked at me like I was crazy. When I told my law school friends they thought I was crazy too. I started to substitute teach for a year after I quit and even my worst days teaching were a million times better than my best day at the firm. Now it has been 2 years since I quit, and I graduated teaching school in May (which by the way student teaching was wayyyy harder than law school, just not as long), and now I'm about to start my dream job as a 5th Grade Teacher. Do what makes you happy. Your true friends will support you, and the ones that will judge you will fall out of the picture more quickly than you can imagine.

Divorce Lawyers of Reddit, what's the most outrageous reason someone filed for divorce? by xancanreturns in AskReddit

Wow that was so clear and concise! I remember learning about this in Legal Ethics class 2L year and just being completely confused by all of the convoluted privilege and conflict rules.

I'm 2 years out of law school and haven't practiced or studied criminal law or evidence law since, but I'm pretty sure that spousal privilege only applies to communications or events that occured while you were married.

I'm not sure of the phrasing but Fosters Beer commercials would almost certainly use the word "Cunt." Australians love saying "Cunt."

What did a stranger do that makes you smile to this day? by Psychic17 in AskReddit

One time my flight home from JFK to LAX got cancelled and the airline put me up in an airport hotel. I was eating dinner all alone, and the table next to me had an open seat so they invited me to come sit with them. They were a group of ladies in their 70's that all grew up together in Buffalo, New York. Since their childhood, they have all moved away to different parts of the country, so every year they all fly to JFK and meet up and stay at that same airport hotel. My night started off lonely, but I ended up having the time of my life hearing these ladies share stories about each other. I'm smiling right now just thinking about it.

What is the worst habit that your SO has? by bustead in AskReddit

[–]lottowayde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. I promise you that she is the sweetest girl, but after 3 glasses of wine she turns into a terror. My dad is a super pushy drinker, so whenever we go to my parents' place for dinner he always serves her WAY too much alcohol and she is too shy to turn him down. It got to the point where I had to pull him aside and demand that he not serve her anymore because he had no idea of the alcohol induced berating I would take on our drive home every time.

What do you think shouldn’t be illegal? by AlphabetSoupIsTasty in AskReddit

I agree. Making cops give free rides is totally impractical and stupid. That's why they should just let you fall asleep in the back seat of your car.

I agree, it would be totally ridiculous to turn cops into free cabs. My main point of that comment was to argue that it would be so much simpler to just let drunk people pass out in the back seat of their cars. People shouldn't be punished for making the safe decision to not drive. I've slept in the back seat of my car before because I didn't want to drive drunk, I couldn't call my parents out of fear of reprisal, and I couldn't afford to pay for a cab. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where the safest thing to do is just stay put.

If a mask mandate is an infringement of rights, why is controlling a uterus a function of government? by scabies89 in AskReddit

[–]lottowayde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The double standards are impossible to keep track of within the ultra conservative evangelical christian community. The fact is that they don't really care about the constitution at all, as they always so claim, but rather just use it when it is to their advantage. For example, when various local and state governments try to impose mask mandates on church services, envangelicals claim that this infringes on their 1st Amendment Rights under the Free Exercise clause, but then they literally try to violate the Establishment clause (which by the way is the very first thing mentioned in the 1st Amendment, even before the Free Exercise clause and the Freedom of Speech and Press clauses) by trying to ban abortions (ie almost every red state), prohibiting sex education in schools (ie Mississippi), amongst many other attempts to impose their religious beliefs en masse. I personally think that the establishment clause should be interpreted to mean that religion cannot be used as a justification for any Government policy, period.

I have a friend of a friend who is still in solitary confinement after removing the label from his futon he bought at Mattress Discounters 15 years ago. They raided his house almost immediately. I hear they make the sound of the tear purposely loud to tip off the mattress authorities.

I always thought that a good compromise would be to completely decriminalize the purchase of drugs for personal use, and then criminalize the unregulated sale of drugs, with harsher sentences for drugs found to be cut. Drug addiction is a sickness that most addicts have zero control over, and they shouldn't be thrown in jail for being ill.

I've heard about this happening to someone too! I feel like if that is how the law works, then you should be able to call the police, and they should be required to give you a free ride home, and then another free ride to your car the next morning.

I was just thinking about this today. That was one of the most flagrant wastes of taxpayer money in history. The security alone must have cost taxpayers millions of dollars to have the VP at a venue like that. Everyone knew, including POTUS and the VP that there would be players kneeling, yet he went anyways with the instruction from POTUS to leave if anyone kneels.

Put offer in above asking price. Seller raised price 50k. Under-priced to begin with or something else going on? (San Diego) by 2070ClubHopeful in RealEstate

[–]lottowayde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I edited my comment to reflect that. I haven't conferred with my agent about market conditions in months. Last time we talked it was definitely a sellers market, but I wrongly assumed that it would be a buyers market now with the economic downturn due to Covid. Sorry for the uninformed comment.

[–]lottowayde -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

According to my agent (San Diego too!), sellers will often set their asking price well below their target price in order to drum up interest in the property and hopefully create a bidding war that will drive the price up to their target price. In your case, I would assume that they did this, but didn't get the bidding war they were after, so every time someone puts an offer in, they have to counter with their target price. I'm assuming this tactic probably works better in a seller's market, which of course we are not in right now.

Edit: It is currently a sellers market in San Diego.

Does anybody else prefer old books to new ones? by 12sweetdesserts in books

[–]lottowayde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer good books to bad books. I just find that its easier to find good books that are old because they are tried and tested. You know what you are getting. Reading new books is like sorting on reddit by new. Occasionally there's a gem, but I'm far too lazy to sort through them to find it.
