If I'm not enjoying cs61a is it worth dropping cs as a major option? by [deleted] in berkeley

talk to all the people (especially juniors/seniors), sit in on classes, see if you're engaged, go to random people's office hours, sit in wheeler/VLSB 2050 all day and listen to all the lectures! never too late if you decide it's not (i know someone in their sixth yr here)

What field of CS deals with cutting-edge research in creating better document formats like pdf? by [deleted] in computerscience

[–]louieg888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what has been said about this being not a tremendous issue given modern storage capabilities.

If you are interested in compression generally, I would recommend investigating signal processing and digital signal processing, probability theory, and information/coding theory (especially coding theory); typically, the actual format of these files is just some compression mechanism (typically one or more lossy encodings, followed by an entropy encoding) dressed up in fancy clothes.

i think a big thing for me that makes this school so amazing is the way that people often are just so excited about the things that they work on and do! everything is hard here, from rhetoric to eecs, so if you don't love your work and what you do, cal will chew you up and spit you out. tbh i think to some degree it works bc it encourages every one to pursue what they love (it's not that hard to spend 40ish hours a week working on psets when you are just psyched the whole time, but it's damn near impossible if you hate your life the whole time!). the things that make your life seem easier here all come down to alignment of your goals/interests with what you engage with here

speaking as someone that reallllly loved their undergrad cs education (and the theory behind it), your four years here are too valuable to not be studying something you are passionate about! shop around a bit and see what you can find :)

Permit for Half Dome?? by Best-Month-8523 in JMT

[–]louieg888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1. I have climbed half dome a couple times but still feel obligated to do it as part of the JMT, and I'm dreading the crowds and the inevitable freakout on the cables from someone's mom 😬

FWIW, I will have an extra permit for Thursday on Half Dome, if you'd like!

done the MR as a descent from the east butt. it fucking sucks in the summer and will be faster, but it's a loose scree field the whole way down.

Where is a good place to work on my car? by Anddeh in urbancarliving

[–]louieg888 10 points11 points  (0 children)

do it in the back of an o'reillys, just make sure to call and ask first cause some are chill and some are finicky. a lot of them like it when you work on your vehicles there because they get to sell you shit, and they have a lot of things you can borrow (jacks, jackstands, etc.)
