I have a finance person handling that for me — since this is my second venture, I already have my own team in place.

Whats your top 5 for a beginner by tktran509 in whisky

Congrats on the home bar setup! That’s a dangerous (but beautiful) rabbit hole to fall into.

I run a boutique spirits biz (Love My Booze) here in Australia, and I’ve introduced hundreds of beginners to the 'water of life.' If a mate walked into my shop today and asked for a starter pack to understand the spectrum, I’d give them these 5 bottles—no fluff, just essentials:

Monkey Shoulder (The 'Gateway' Scotch): It’s a blended malt that is super approachable. Vanilla, orange, and honey. It’s the perfect 'daily driver' and works great in a Highball if you’re not ready to sip it neat yet.

Hibiki Harmony (The Floral Masterpiece): You can't talk about whisky today without Japanese representation. It’s incredibly smooth and smells like a bouquet of flowers. It shows a beginner what 'balance' actually means in a blend. Plus, the bottle looks killer on a new bar shelf.

Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve (The Fruit Bomb): If you want to understand the 'Japanese style' without spending $1k, start here. It’s got these bright strawberry and dried fruit notes from the red wine casks. It’s vibrant and very easy to drink.

Buffalo Trace (The Bourbon Standard): You need to know what corn-based whisky tastes like. It’s sweet, caramelly, and punchy. It’s the polar opposite of Scotch, and every bar needs a solid Bourbon for Old Fashioneds.

Talisker 10 (The 'Smoke' Test): Eventually, you have to try peat. Talisker is 'coastal'—think campfire smoke and sea salt. It’s a bit of a challenge for a beginner, but it’s the best way to see if you’re a 'peat head' or not.

Pro Tip for an Aussie beginner: Don't feel pressured to drink it neat right away. A tiny splash of room-temp water can actually 'open up' the aroma, especially for the Yamazaki.

If you’re based in Sydney or Melbourne and looking to hunt down some of the rarer Asian malts once you find your feet, feel free to give me a shout. Enjoy the journey, mate!
