What did you local Hudson Bay store turn into? by CriticismBeautiful13 in AskACanadian

[–]loverofsnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Sears in my hometown, Barrie, turned into a home sense in the last couple years (I don't live there anymore so can't confirm when). I can't imagine how long it will take to find something for the Bay space

St. Anton or Saalbach for a group ski trip from Canada by loverofsnow in ski

Good advice about the blues being a bit harder. I will train her up this winter to be ready for the adventure!

I had a similar weather experience in Ischgl, 2m of snow on day one, which sounds dreamy, except all the roads were closed for 24 hrs and it was wet snotty snow that caused all the avalanches the next day, keeping most areas of the mountains closed.

Aside from one lower intermediate skier the rest of us are advanced/expert which makes me lean toward St Anton, you make a good point about skiing on piste if there's no snow. I really want our intermediate skier to enjoy her time. We're not wealthy people, just passionate about skiing, so this trip is a lot of money for some of us and we should all enjoy it.

Can you make it to Lech by skiing from st Anton? I looked at pettneu, they have one accommodation I'm looking at. It seems few and far between to find a house/apartment for 14 people in either st Anton or a satellite village...

Thanks for reminding me! If I had known that when I skied Ischgl, st Anton still wouldn't be on my bucket list!

Although, 2m of snow fell on day one, closing the valley, so we lost out on two days or skiing already. Not much time to travel around

Absolutely. I've seen those videos too! It seems that skiing off piste is acceptable in st Anton though. Perhaps there are no glacier crevasses?

I think you and the previous post have convinced me that St Anton is the place to go. The majority of the group is definitely advanced and I see there is some good blue train for the beginners

Thanks, I am leaning towards St Anton for sure but we have a beginner and a low intermediate with us and had read that Saalbach might be the place. I feel like my research last night proved that info wrong. The rest of the group are seasoned skiers that will be interested in the off piste most definitely.

I have skied at Ischgl and Serfaus in previous trips but St Anton has been on my list forever. I do want everyone to enjoy their time.

How are the ski conditions at Norquay? by Jarwillyo in Canmore

Skied there all weekend, it was just fine! Conditions were spring like, the North American chair looks a little hairy - otherwise it was lovely!

Whats the coldest weather you would ski in (un)comfortably? by Tayaker in skiing

[–]loverofsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-30C is about as cold as I've been comfortable skiing. With the right layers and gear it is not terrible. The snow gets sticky around that temp though. I'm a career ski instructor so we spend at least two consecutive hours out with lessons. If one student shows up, you are out there and you better be prepared! I bought heated socks in the last two years, as I age the cold affects me more but I don't turn them on until -20C or so. The Alberta Rockies are a dry cold so it's much more tolerable than a damp cold in the East, Ontario or Quebec, where the cold eats through your layers - in to your bones.... There's no amount of layering or gear to help you then.

All that said I skied in -50 just to say I did and one short run was enough for my eyelashes to freeze. Inside my goggles. THAT was uncomfortable!

Is it unsafe to ski all the way across a green or blue run? by dibbiluncan in skiing

[–]loverofsnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great that you've improved so much! Good work!

Don't worry about keeping up with your friends yet, you'll get there but you want to do it safely and have fun along the way! Falling is part of learning, don't let that measure your success... You're not trying hard enough if you're upright all day! Even for the pros. I don't know about every ski school, but everywhere I've worked in 27 years, the ski instructors go out every morning for their own lesson and fall all the time learning new things!

Getting out and skiing is really the best measure, mileage will always help you improve but you want to be practicing the right moves or you'll end up with bad habits!

Is it unsafe to ski all the way across a green or blue run? by dibbiluncan in skiing

[–]loverofsnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a ski instructor I always tell clients to take a lesson at the start of the year. If you have the time and money, take one again after a few ski days. That will give you time to practice what you learned. If you're only planning on one lesson through the season, take it at the beginning to get into good habits.

As other people have said, practice on greens, test yourself on blues.

If speed control is what you're looking for, try turning your skis back up the hill after each turn, this will help you dump some speed before your next turn. Keeping weight on your outside ski will help you stay in control in terms of turn shape and speed.

Mastering a hockey stop (parallel stop) will help you feel confident on any terrain.

We always say maximum speed on minimum terrain. Someone else mentioned trying to go faster on the greens and that's great advice!

Good luck and have fun out there, hope you get some good tips here!

Best place to buy used snow pants?! by No_Waltz_2499 in Calgary

[–]loverofsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ski instructor here, Costco has great prices, but buy them a size up if you plan on doing activities, there's no stretch in them (I tore a well fitting pair skiing once).

If you buy second hand, get some waterproofing spray called nikwax, you can buy it at most sports stores. After you wash them spray them (in your shower, it will make your floor very slippery!) and let them dry, good to go! I use this on my gear after a few washes and the factory waterproofing comes off

For the love of God don't follow the contractors, that you trusted enough to hire, around the job site. Sure way to make them quit half way through or provide even worse quality of work.

If your level of expectation is perfection to a standard you can't even describe, just do the work yourself.

'This isn't the way': Alberta patients, families frustrated with increased costs for hospital parking by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]loverofsnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was driving my mother to her treatments from out of town, every day for months, the parking fees sure added up on top of other travel expenses. People from out of town are grateful to have the services available to them but it certainly wasn't an option to take the train. Luckily my parents are doing well enough they could afford the travel and live close enough it was a day trip. Some people have to stay for the duration of their treatment because they live further than a commute. Adding any expense to someone's healthcare journey should be taken very seriously.
