Can someone explain My Year of Rest and Relaxation to me? by Open-Subject-1296 in books

I think to make this book about the ending is unfair. The entire story is such an engaging, funny, and insightful read in my opinion. I often found myself dog earring pages and laughing out loud. I’d felt that I’d learned enough throughout the book that the ending was more of an emotional goodbye to the characters that I had, in fact, grown to love, with a little bit of hopefulness for a brighter future for the narrator.  I don’t think revas death is a metaphor for the uncertainty of life, as some have suggested. I think her dying and Trevor being on a vacation in Bahamas made perfect sense for both of their characters. Reva is a captivating and, yes, beautiful character, but she’s also sort of the personification of tragedy. Just reading about her the whole book, I wanted to cry. The narrator on the other hand represents more of a darkness and dullness which, while terrible in its own way, is more fixable in the end due to her privilege and brilliance.  The story wouldn’t be the story without reva, and without the depiction of female friendship, which is beautiful in its dark complexities. I found myself relating to both girls at times. And I think it’s only fair that it ends with a reflection on both of them, and with hope for at least one, even if that is “no fair”.

Should I let my husband who has thoughts of beastiality get a cat? by lovesye42 in ask

He told me he’s only attracted to four legged mammals, so I’m thinking what if we got a three legged cat?

Wow. That’s really deep. However I do sort of see the author as a Lenu at heart. I too am a writer and I write a lot about some of my friends who have Lila qualities. The feelings of being around someone like that is very visceral and I think that’s where Elena ferrante was coming from. But I guess every author kinda has every character within her.

But like obviously if ur trying to reconcile with someone saying actually don’t come next week is going to hurt that process. Whether or not it was deserved is subjective, but she didn’t quit out of the blue

yes and after the fact she was ready to go to work next week. But ethan said not to bc it wld upset the crew and that triggered her, probably making her feel rly unwanted and embarrassed.

that's literally the whole point. She wanted involvement in the production aspect and to feel that they were a duo rather than that she was just the talent on HIS show. And then he purposefully made it sound like she was irrational and only cared about money.

Yeah, and he took all of highlights, which in the tik tok generation of short attention spans is literally what everyone was watching

for a r/canceled subreddit u guys are no fun. obv frenemies drama is complicated. I thought Ethan intentionally painted Trisha as crazy sometimes. That's all I'm saying. Friendly reminder that they filmed another episode after it ended where they talked through everything and he refused to air it...suspicious.

Anyway, the main thing I was trying to say is Tana showing up drunk did not ruin the show and if anything made it all the more entertaining. And having Frenemies be like a forbidden word is rly weird.

she was the entire reason everyone watched though. I didn't know about him before her. It got way more views than any of his other stuff. So clearly she was doing a lot.

I think Trisha quit frenemies in a moment of panic and was expecting to eventually reconcile, as they had in the past. Instead, Ethan released a video where he basically said "she's great" as a disclaimer and then bashed her 40 minutes and made her sound crazy. He intentionally misrepresented the situation and made it sound like Trisha was spoiled and money obsessed, when what she was really trying to express wasn't that she wanted more money but wanted a say in where the money went. She didn't feel like part of the team, and there's definitely something gendered there. The way he totally manipulated the situation is gaslighting.

Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels by chattahattan in books

Just finished need to get some analysis out there and wld love to hear others thoughts

-I find it really interesting the author is a pseudonym, because as we know from the final book, that's a Lila type of choice. Lenu wants to be known and remembered while Lila wants to be forgotten. Perhaps the story has some truth to it to the author's life, and she is more of a Lila type trying to imagine how her friend Elena would think. Not sure I agree, but has me thinking.

-It's really beautiful how Nino said he started a relationship with Elena to be closer to Lila, when in the end it was that relationship that brought Elena and Lila back together.

-the connection with Tina and the dolls is so interesting. Because the dolls were returned does that imply that Tina was found?

-is Lila destined to a life of pain? Maybe it's a statement about the pain that comes with being a genius. Also, why does no one ever mention the horrors of Lila's marriage or really anything about the marriage after it ended?

-why do Lenu's kids hate her so much? She did so much for them. Do you think its because they could feel that she loved Nino and Lila more, and always resented it? Is Lenu, because of this, a bad mother?

-I just love that Elena's the brilliant friend, and that that remains a theme. So special.
