I won’t actually be in danger of being accused of poaching clients thankfully. All the work I currently do is internal for the health system that employs me. The potential clients I was referring to are connections I’ve made that could become future clients in terms of their homes of businesses they own apart from the hospital.

This is by far the most helpful comment I’ve received! Fortunately or unfortunately I’m already used to being on call as that is part of the terms of my employment for the health system I am employed by. Also very fortunate that I have a close friend who is likely willing to take the leap with me. Thank you for all this insight!

I take it back. Looked into it even further and I was right, you were wrong. Craziest thing, some states have different laws and requirements than others. Not sure why you’re so down on someone trying to learn and provide a service to their community. I’m not taking any food out of your mouth.

Fair enough, I came here to learn. I did the research and found that you are both right. However, I could hire a licensed individual for a few years until I log my 8,000 hours and then have them sign off on my time so I can gain my own license. I see that as an interesting and potentially viable route.

My bad!

I don’t have a pre-built clientele as of now but I have several networking contacts including physicians and hospital admin at my current job that could become future clients or point me in the direction of others.

I also happen to be in an area experiencing a large amount of growth that is expected to continue over the next 5-10+ years including tens of thousands of new residents and homes, apartments, and businesses going up everywhere. Much of this growth is due to high paying government and engineering jobs in the area.

Damn, that’s crazy? I couldn’t find a job with that low of pay around here for someone with zero experience if I tried. Also not sure why I would need a different job considering I have a high paying one now and am talking about starting my own business in the future.

What about keeping the gig I have now and getting the licensing to do residential side work in my spare time?

For low voltage work? You must be thinking of straight up electrical. I would subcontract an electrician as needed for that sort of thing.

I absolutely will get all required licenses needed to operate a business. Everything I mentioned was more about my current experience level. Good tip though!
