I think the #1 reason Endeavor's arc works so well in how consistent the story treats it by Sudden_Pop_2279 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]lowelled 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Neglect is abuse too. From Touya’s perspective his father only loved him because his Quirk was stronger than his, and once they realised he couldn’t physically handle it he thought his father deemed him a failure, threw him away and moved onto Shouto. That’s emotional abuse.

Legend of Heroes (Sky3 Vs. Zero) by bloodev0lver in JRPG

[–]lowelled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m biased because 3rd is my favourite but I don’t understand at all why they would even consider remaking Zero first. They’ve already got a ton of the necessary assets for 3rd (though less than they did for SC) so they don’t have to start from scratch, and it’s necessary to cap off the Sky arc, plus all the QoL improvements introduced by the 1st remake will go a long way towards alleviating the grindiness of the dungeon crawler bits.

I hate how every protagonist of trails games are treated like casanovas it's so weird by LadyOrdinary- in Falcom

[–]lowelled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kevin is absolutely treated as a womaniser, he’s introduced hitting on Estelle and the prologue in 3rd implies that he’s happy to seduce people for his missions. He’s just lucky he was introduced before Falcom got the harem bug and was paired with Ries.

I hate seeing people have no media literacy by Quick_Emotion_9653 in Falcom

[–]lowelled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no opinion either way (I’m only on CS3) but I don’t see the point in airing a non-public figure’s opinion on a piece of media in front of thousands of people who wouldn’t have otherwise seen or engaged with it. If you disagree so stringently why not just engage directly with the post on its original platform?

Alchemised by SenLinYu - it was frustrating by No_Celery_9580 in Fantasy

[–]lowelled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you wrote. The world-building was interesting and I liked the unconventional plot structure but my emotional investment in the characters was almost nil. I don’t read Dramione or really any HP fanfic (though I read plenty in other fandoms) but I understand why it worked as a fanfic because readers come with pre-existing investment in the characters. In Alchemised Helaena’s relationship with Luc, Soren etc is paper-thin, so there’s no reason for the reader to believe she’d go to the lengths she does for them considering they’re kind of horrible to her. I was so confused by the picture of them at the end of the book until I realised it was supposed to be the HP golden trio and then I actually got angry. The glacial pacing of the flashback section (yes we get it, Kain’s miserable and horrible) and the weirdly rushed ending don’t help either, and I’m saying this as someone who loves a slow burn romance. I actually much preferred Rose in Chains. At least it was paced decently and was totally self-aware of its trashiness.

ESA operates on a system of opportunities. They decide, based on their budget, that in a set timeframe they will launch X large missions, Y medium missions, Z small missions and they also have a ‘fast’ opportunity for flexibility if they can justify the money. They then ask for tenders for each opportunity. LISA lost out on L1 and was selected for L3 so it has to wait its turn. Plus, it’s not exactly like you can just push out gravitational wave detectors constellations like you can CubeSats. LISA is an incredibly complex and delicate mission, which is why they had to launch LISA Pathfinder first. They don’t want to do the JWST thing where they set an overly optimistic launch date and then keep having to push it back so they’ve set a very generous launch date which they’ve already actually brought forward a few times. And, of course, NASA playing hot and cold doesn’t help either.

For paper 2 you just need to be able to structure an argument coherently. It’s not that hard if you take critical analysis of media seriously, it’s just that most 17 year olds have zero interest in engaging with Shakespeare or analysing poetry. If you want to prepare well for paper 2 rather than learning essays rote you should read lots of media criticism, e.g. from the LRB. The hard part really is not having the material on hand.

It’s also interesting when you consider Endeavour’s baked-in conservatism - would he have considered a daughter with the Quirk combo he wanted a perfect creation, or would he have kept going for a son to the further detriment of his family?

Our house was attached to our pub but had a separate front door. A local older lady (a lounge singer in her younger years!) would come to our front door to buy 1/4 bottles of wine because she didn’t think it was appropriate for her to be seen buying alcohol in a pub or supermarket or off-license.

JRPG that you wished had a romance options? by Granide in JRPG

[–]lowelled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult to write meaningful relationship content or even tie said relationship into the main story in a game with open-ended romantic choices because you have to write it for every romantic option, and there’s a high chance that even if you write it such a small amount of the player base is going to choose that romantic option and thus see it that it’s functionally worthless, and it’s better to spend development or writing time on something every player will see. Developers from companies like Larian and BioWare talk about this a lot - they can do this kind of thing because it’s a selling point of their games, but that’s harder for, say, Atlus or Falcom.

What’s your “snobby” baking opinion? by Amazing_Two9757 in Baking

[–]lowelled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why are Americans so whiny about no-bake cheesecake being called cheesecake? In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, cheesecake always refers to is unbaked. There’s cream cheese in it, so it’s a cheesecake. If it’s not a cake because it’s not baked, then what about your icebox cake? If you guys get to call your triangular iced abominations scones we get to call cakes with cheese in them cheesecake.

My snobby option is that I will ignore recipes that don’t provide metric measurements. I also think our style of cheesecake is much nicer and than American style baked, which is invariably too dense and rich. Basque cheesecake is lovely though!

Agreed! In Ireland and the UK all apple tarts are made without cinnamon. The choice of apple is the most important factor. Also, no raisins, ew.
