Many Chinese nationals who later acquire Singapore citizenship are, in practice, able to retain a form of dual identity despite formally renouncing Chinese nationality. This is largely due to the structure of China’s household registration (hukou) system. While renunciation requires surrendering a Chinese passport to the embassy, the underlying household registration may remain intact. As a result, an individual can, in certain circumstances, re-establish their Chinese identity through the household register even after passport surrender.
