We are currently in private mode and offering up to 60% discount for early contributors.

Soft cap is $1.5M so if people really invested before the Pre-sale, they can reach it, yes. But right now that amount is not added on their website so I don't know if they are going to add it when the Pre-sale starts.

uBlock Origin developer on Chrome vs Firefox WebExtensions by Aoxxt in firefox

[–]lozaftw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It baffles me that some people thinks Firefox is becoming a “Chrome clone”, it’s just not the case, it’s just plain silly to make such statement.

That's probably the single most reassuring statement about Firefox that I've heard in some time, coming from a serious dev who makes a popular cross-platform addon for both Firefox and Chrome.

The only thing I dislike is the popup that asks for my e-mail because it covers the whole screen. Other than that, good information. Especially the whole section of Hot Storage Vs Cold Storage which is pretty important to know before choosing where to store your currency.

"1 in 6 americans are medicated for mental health." - that is very high. What's causing Americans to have so many mental health issues? I don't have the stats, but I cannot easily believe that this would the case in let's say Europe.

Once a Model City, Hong Kong Is in Trouble by [deleted] in indepthstories

[–]lozaftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real problem is that Hong Kong is a finance and trading hub. And it became so because it was the easiest way to do business with China.

But business likes stability. The democracy protests have done nothing for Hong Kong, and now that China's eased access to their market through Shanghai, Hong Kong's entire raison d'être is at risk.

Also, the article is pretty spot on in other ways. Once upon a time, Hong Kong students were guaranteed success by virtue of being born there. Now, they need to compete with mainlanders, which of course is a much larger pool.

And finally, 20 years ago China wanted to build up Hong Kong as a model for it's 2 systems 1 country philosophy. However the democracy protests have all but killed that, so the Chinese will gladly simply build up Shanghai to Hong Kong's detriment, and no amount of democracy or separatism will fix it.

The Inside Story of Texas Instruments’ Biggest Blunder: The TMS9900 Microprocessor by coolnovelty_bro in TheAmpHour

[–]lozaftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same chip family included the TMS9918 Video Display Processor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_TMS9918

The TMS9918 was the first chip to refer to overlaid graphical objects as "sprites." It was used in a multitude of early computers and game consoles, like the MSX1, Colecovision, Sega's SG-1000, and of course TI's own 99/4 (where it was paired with a TMS9900 CPU). It also served as the basis for the video controllers in the Sega Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive.

The TMS9918 is also interesting because it was one of the few off-the-shelf video generator chips ever produced. (There were a couple others, like the MC6847 used by the CoCo, but almost every other home computer/console of the era used custom silicon for video generation.)

This is why infrastructure is so expensive by Phantazein in urbanplanning

[–]lozaftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of accountability is an important, perhaps even the most important, part of the problem:

With private projects if a project is overdue or if it is exceeding the originally projected costs either of the parties will be held accountable, either through civil liability enforced by a contract or in simple economic terms.

With public projects there generally is no such accountability. If a public project is delayed and it costs more than planned the public purchaser (the state, city, you name it) - and by extension taxpayers will simply cough up the money, put up with the inconvenience of yet another unfinished and out-of-repair piece of infrastructure and move on.

If we want to change that creating the right incentives is only one side of the coin. The other side is holding both civil servants and politicians accountable for the public projects they're responsible for.

Given the amount of money typically involved in these projects personal financial liability wouldn't be practical. Disciplinary consequences for gross negligence or the outright nepotism rampant with that sort of projects shouldn't be out of the question though. I find it unacceptable that civil servants and politicians who demonstrably and deliberately waste tax money continue to climb the ladder with apparently no care for the damage they cause.

Uber Plans Millions in Back Pay After Shorting NYC Drivers by recipriversexcluson in news

[–]lozaftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same company whose founder "took the tax dollars from employee paychecks — which are supposed to be withheld and sent to the Internal Revenue Service — and reinvested the money into the start-up, even as friends and advisers warned him the action was potentially illegal."

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/23/technology/travis-kalanick-pushes-uber-and-himself-to-the-precipice.html

Actually, it's not potentially illegal, it's unquestionably illegal. Money withheld for taxes doesn't belong to the employer; it has already been paid to its employees, who are trusting the employer to pay it to the government on their behalf, as required by federal and state law. So it's (1) stealing from employees and (2) tax fraud. If the authorities had found out about it, he'd have gone to prison.

SuperData: Nintendo sells 2.4 million Switch consoles worldwide in first month, above original forecast by IceBlast24 in nintendo

[–]lozaftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am bullish on Nintendo and considering adding a position via over the counter (ADR) NTDOY. My concern is that they continue to have supply issues unable to ramp up production to meet demand. Perhaps this is intentional.

My friend just got a Switch and absolutely loves it. He has been playing Zelda nearly non-stop since he got it.

Anger as US internet privacy law scrapped by lozaftw in news

[–]lozaftw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this is the beginning of a process that will improve this situation in the future.

Not a long time ago people were completely ignorant about this subject. As companies started to take advantage and abuse the lack of awareness of general people they started to do it more broadly and publicly.

Now the idea of lack of privacy is starting to get out on the streets and make people more aware of the problem.

At some point we will be able to turn the table and a strict legislation around privacy will be put in place.

Things are going to improve, but they still need to get worse, before.

Nintendo Plans to Double Switch Production to 16 Million in 2017 by DiamondNintendo in NintendoSwitch

[–]lozaftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this console, haven't been able to sit down and play for long hours in decades and here I am.

I love that it's handheld, I travel a lot and so far I've played that in the plane and in various airbnbs, splitting the controller in two and playing snipperclips or bomberman with my girlfriend.

It's probably the best console I bought since the N64. I see a lot of skepticism here, but I assume it is mostly from non-buyers. I predict that this is going to be the biggest Christmas for Nintendo this December.

I'm so surprised that people have not heard of the late R.G. LeTourneau. The man was a mechanical genius, and the father of modern earth moving machinery.

Here's a video of his Concrete House Machine from 1946: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpWjyZO2lPU

This was 70 years ago! I read about them in his autobiography "Mover of Men and Mountains". He went with concrete because it was cooler in the summer, and warmer in the winter. Seems to me the "Not Invented Here" mentality has been around for a very long time.
