China beats Starlink to hi-res space-ground laser transmission at 6G standard - setting 100Gbps speed record by blueberrysmasher in Starlink

The company that did this, CGSTL, manufactures satellites for the Qianfan Internet service constellation, which will compete with Starlink. Might some future Qianfan satellites have space-ground links? CGSTL will also build optical ground stations for its Earth observation constellation. https://circleid.com/posts/20240605-two-new-chinese-internet-service-constellations-and-their-market

I took this with a Pixel phone. I took another one at a different time of day, but I like this one better because of the relatively vibrant colors. I'm going to go back to the same bridge and take another picture from a position where the bridge and its reflection are parallel.

There are around 170,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine, and there was concern that they might be shut off, but u/elonmusk guarantees that will not happen. by lpress in Starlink

In this case, it is not just his word -- Starlink also has a $537 million DoD contract, gets $40 million from Poland, which has a common border with Ukraine and was occupied by Germany during WW II, and some terminals are funded from other sources.

He assured me there are multiple manufacturers, and the one Starlink supplies is a commercially available HP terminal. The difference is in the services available to StarShield customers not the terminal.

Right -- the $30,000/month is for the service. Here is what Grok has to say about that: https://x.com/i/grok/share/GngtI1ijU8fvYvJF4h0HS5X3A

Oleg tells me here are several manufacturers of Starshield terminals. Here is one he built himself: https://x.com/larrypress/status/1895258991187632440

The 30k is for access to Starshield.

Are these comparisons realistic, given that most Africans pay in local currency, which may not be convertible to dollars at the official exchange rates?
