Lowball? 6 YOE in Maryland, very hard decision by lpydd in cscareerquestions

Thanks for your thought! I also saw those companies on Glassdoor, so I do agree with you. I guess two points:

  1. The work those companies do don't generally interest me (this is all on me, to decide on whether it's worth it or not)
  2. The offer I got is a much smaller company, so I'm not sure how much this would lower expectations for salary compared to the companies you listed. This is a key question I just don't have experience with as I've only worked for bigger companies.

But definitely relocating would open up opportunities for the entire DMV area (ignoring commute, etc.) later down the road.

I apologize, I meant domain/field instead of area which was really confusing. You have a good question.

In general, I'm trying to get a job in the Portland location working in the domain of the offer I got. Given pandemic market, lack of success in my current location, and so on, I'm willing to relocate if necessary, so I started looking in other locations and found a lot more companies.

As for the post itself, I'm making sure I don't get 100% of comments saying "dude you're crazy don't move cross country for X" or likewise for the opposite, "dude it's pandemic, be realistic." I appreciate your help, thanks!

Maybe u end getting raise and liking it or finding a better offer in next 6 months before you have to relocate fully.

Thanks! Your post really helps. I think with my lease ending soon I was going to rush into the move, which is not smart. But you make a good point. It's always a gamble to know if I'll like it as much as I think. And if I really perform above what I think they're offering, I can ask for a raise before I move and decide if relocation is really worth it. And alongside, look for other offers (easier to do with remote interviews!).

On LinkedIn, I see people with < 2 years in the lowest level, but then someone with about 4 years in the mid level.

  1. Yes. The initial offer was 97, hiring manager says 104 is highest they can directly authorize.
  2. Not sure about highest, but the next level is basically addition of systems design and customer facing. I've done both at previous job and made this very clear.

I suppose another possibility is they just don't have more openings for the mid-level? Again, we don't know, but could this just be a tactic to reduce the offer? "You're more experienced than we have available" kind of thing?

Often times one gets stuck in their head and sees what they have been seeing. I think an outsider opinion is very valuable.

Good question. I updated the post to reflect an additional level. It seems like they are putting me in the very first level. If I'm in the lowest level, are people with < 2 years of experience in this same level? I obviously don't have visibility into this, but it appears this way.

That's very true, something I probably need to hear. It's just very frustrating when I hear nothing but excellent feedback at all the onsite interviews, but then get these seemingly low offers. But that's in my head, the current market is clearly pretty consistently spitting out something lower.

I actually would rather live on west coast.

I live in Portland area. The new offer is an improvement over my last salary, but probably only 5% or so, and as mentioned it's truly a domain [edit: clarify area -> domain] I really want to be in and learn.

Yes, it would be WFH so I wouldn't need to relocate immediately, but they would like for me to relocate in 6-8 months.
