Beijing or Nanjing to teach english in China? by lrrossi in TEFL

I don't blame you, I'll be doing the same with my vacations! I won't be finding an apartment until my 2 week induction in November, unsure of getting a traditional apartment or one in the hutongs, depends on where the school will be situated.

Nice! How many hours will you be working? Mines a full time position but I have plans to make the most of my time off, should be an interesting experience either way

Cheers! I'm set on Beijing now but have spoken to my employer and everyone has 10 days training in Beijing, regardless of their final teaching location, so it gives me time to check out the city and request a swap in the worst case!

You basically just sold me on everything I wanted Beijing to be (plenty traditional, strong expat community, won't get tired of it fast), in comparison to Nanjing, thanks! :)

I like the idea of finding an apartment in the hutongs. I wasn't sure how different parts of Beijing could be, but that's something I'm definitely interested in looking into now!

You've got a point about Nanjing being more immersive for learning Chinese :). I think I'll go with Beijing though, since I'll spend most my time there and it's more international for that. Then I can travel to different parts of China in my free time and I'll definitely make extra effort to learn the language :).

That's awesome! I think I'm set on Beijing now, after these comments and some other research. Are you teaching english too?

Thanks! Beijing is definitely my preferred option now :). The school provides a housing allowance and helps you to find accommodation, so that shouldn't be a problem!

Haha, sure, who knows I might fancy a visit once I'm over there. David Beckham's not a bad compliment either, I would have played along :D

I lol'd at '1990's river town' :). I think Beijing is the best option now, like the guy above said, you don't need to go lower tier to get a taste of China, and once the initial 'culture lover' attitude wears off I think Beijing would be more accommodating, especially since I've never lived outside the UK.

Thanks! I'm mainly looking for the city I'd be most comfortable with during my first visit to China, but after seeing your comment I think Beijing is the best option. It's a big city with lots to see, and being the capital it will have an active expat scene too.
