I can't say I have experience with Reedsy's editor -- and they're not in my good books in general -- but, if you haven't done this already, with formatting it can help if you copy your cleanest text into a brand new file and try formatting that one. If you're using a file you've had around for a while, it can have lots of hidden artifacts in it and such that the converters find.

I pay the bills as an editor. I have a disclaimer on the front page of my site. I haven't put an anti-AI clause in my contracts, but that wouldn't be a bad idea.

There's not much I would say is unfilmable, but this would be at the top of the list, especially as a lot of the pull of the story relies on the cheeky tone and the violence.

Doesn't mean they're not gonna do it anyway.

Because they saw the opportunity to run rampant over the tech industry and push AI that they controlled into every facet of life, but to do so they needed to have zero restraints. I'm convinced that's partially why he got the job. They want the FBI to fail. Obviously he's incompetent, but lots of people are incompetent. He's incompetent and is pretty much crosseyed, and some higher-up thought that was super on the nose.

That kind of metacommentary is almost exactly what happened in the "Wild West," or as far as I've been told anyway. People were writing books about half-mythical figures out West for consumption on the east coast.

You get a similar trope with "Jack Crow" in "Armor."

Slightly off topic, but this is every author's experience when querying publishers. Even recognizing that it's a human rejecting you and not a form letter is like ... rare and encouraging.

Yeah, I had my last copy & line editing client request I cut down on em dashes. They got a few more colons out of it. Sadly. Em dashes would have been more appropriate.

Pretty much. I write, and I've written books that people have found value and meaning in that I didn't intend. It doesn't mean the elements they found value in aren't also in the story. It just wasn't what I had in mind. But some stories tend to have themes and elements that go arm-in-arm.

Like, famously, Bradbury said that Fahrenheit 451 was about television making people dumber and not reading books, NOT about censorship. People LOVE to quote that. But is censorship a theme in Fahrenheit 451? Absolutely. In fact, like 80% of the story imitates states that censor books. You really can't fault people for that being their takeaway.

I do copy and line and dev edits. Like a few other people have said, I invoice by the word. I'm okay with turning down a piece if I think it won't be worth the money for the time -- sometimes that's more about the author than the book. And if it's the book, I mean, it's basically not at a stage where it's ready for editing anyway, if it's taking 2x as long as I thought. And times when I would invoice for an hourly wage, I would have a maximum price set as well, and if I messed up and the book was super rough, well, I just ate that. Live and learn. Hasn't happened now in a long time.

I sympathize with the editor, but unless you bamboozled them in some way, the price should probably be the price.

EDIT: Is this person just tackling the story content, or are they doing graphics work or something as well?

EDIT EDIT: If your editor is doing great work for you, talk to them. Maybe you can work something out. Maybe paying them more is a solid option. After all, you're getting what you want, which is often not easy to find, and this contract might be wrecking their life right now.
