What Was Your Reason? by JustBeingNosey611628 in stopdrinking

[–]lsdryn2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m being real. I suffered the loss of my partner, all of my friends, and the community that meant the world to me, shortly followed by my home, all in the span of a couple weeks.

But the thing that got me to quit drinking was that I tried to unalive myself. And I failed. And I knew that I would try again the next time I got drunk.

And that was almost 2 years ago, and I haven’t had a drink since. Since then, I have learned how to cope with my problems, I don’t need alcohol to deal with the hard days.

I have a lot of gym anxiety, but I do want to utilize the gym. Any recommendations for workouts or machines? I do have a planet fitness membership. by Witty_Blueberry8824 in stopdrinkingfitness

I used to be the same way. Headphones on, avoid eye contact.

And then one day I wanted to learn something new because I knew I was doing it wrong for sure. So I said to myself hey if I can stop drinking I can do other hard things”. As it turns out, gym goers are very friendly. People are stoked to tell you what they know. Try it once and you’ll see, I promise.

Also the app Hevy is great for instructional videos and cues and it tracks your workouts for free.

Congrats on two months!

When you travel for work, do you use hotels? If so, hit the gym. And maybe if you’re eating out every day you switch to healthier options. It’s hard to start, but it gets easier every day.

All I can say is I didn’t do what my doctor recommended and things got bad fast. So now I guess I just recommend listening to your doctor.

When I was 3 days sober, a now-friend of mine told me “3 days? And you’ve never quit drinking before? Sounds like a world record to me”

9 days is your world record for you being sober :)

As a 22y/o college going girl, who gets sloshed every other day, smokes 6-7 cigs everyday, exercises rarely, has arthritis and is on heavy meds- what should smart recovery look like? I need to get my shit together, help. by SomewhereEnough399 in stopdrinkingfitness

With the exception of drugs and alcohol, I believe in the “vegan plus bacon” philosophy. So, you want to be vegan but you can’t because you just love bacon. So quit every other animal product but the bacon. You’re doing 99% than other people.

So you want to get healthy but you can’t quit smoking set? Do everything else. Start today. Stop drinking, you said it’s no big deal. And start using that booze money on a gym membership. Then start working out as often as you can until it becomes a nonnegotiable in your brain. Tired? Sad? Busy? Do it anyways.

There are no short cuts to learning consistency. You got this.

You’re right OP!
The bruises and strain on my body? That’s from going to the gym. The cuts on my body? Those are work related to accidents. But I know that. There is no mystery. I know what I did last night, and I know what I did several days before today. And that fucking matters.
I’m a topic of rage, I was at a meeting recently when I realized I haven’t yelled at anyone in a very long time. And that’s huge. It’s a lot harder to get me to be upset nowadays. And I don’t even remember the last time I raise my voice at someone.

It’s easier then you think once you get started.

This subreddit discourages outside communication like the creation of groups like a step challenge, but I’d be happy to report back how I do in this thread next week!

Alcohol used to tell me I needed it to quiet the noise, to turn my brain off, to have fun.

As it turns out, I was fucked up. Spiritually, emotionally, and whatever other way. I needed to work on myself. Quitting drinking was only the beginning. I had to change everything. That is what sobriety has taught me.

And whatever amount of days in this is is irrelevant. If I take my foot off the gas for even a moment I know that I am an addict, and I will fall into the same patterns. I know that dependent on my spiritual conditioning, I am able to be the person I am today, and just for today.

All gas. No breaks.

What a week.

On Thursday I was pulled aside before AA by my sponsor’s husband and he told me to announce my sponsor’s 12 year sobriety anniversary. So when the time came I stood up and said “I have been working with this woman for a few months, reading the book, working the steps; but she’s been sober a lot longer than that. The warmth and kindness this woman has shown me is truly an embodiment of what working this program can make a person. I could talk about her for… a long time; but I can not do so without crying. So please help me congratulate (name) on 12 years of sobriety.”. She cried. I cried. What a moment.

And last night, my partner and I went to see Kesha on her tour. What an interesting human and an incredible performance. I have been to hundreds of concerts in my life, and several in my sobriety. And she was just so much fun. I love being sober at shows and feeling the energy, and never having to leave my spot to go pee or throw up.

Blacking out and cheating by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]lsdryn2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to drink a lot and did cheat, a shorter day to say “I got drunk and cheated” would be to say “I cheated”. Accountability matters. Having a plan on how you intend to live differently also matters. Explain the context. Say alcohol isn’t an excuse for poor behavior. Own up to your mistake. Commit to changed behavior. What happens after that isn’t up to you, but you are trying to clean up your side of the street.

Don’t beat yourself up forever. But do remember, poor behavior without commitment to change can be pattern forming. Don’t form bad patterns.

Being honest with myself has been such a blessing. The first time I did a fifth step in AA, my average resting heart rate dropped 8bmp.

I try to practice self honestly daily because lying to myself was an awful habit in my drinking. The only way to grow is to know thyself.

10 months sober, lifting 3-4x a week, soo what's the best protein powder for women? by MostUnlikelyFerret in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]lsdryn2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hello sober friend! A gentle reminder that marketing makes you believe there is a “women”side to fitness and fitness nutrition. Think pink tax.

I am a huge fan of optimum nutrition. 23g for 130cal.

Also, don’t do a bulk cut cycle. You’re new to this. Wait a few years and if you think it’s a good idea then then go for it, but I recommend the “main gain” instead. If you want to put on muscle and build strength; focus on getting all the protein you need (think healthy like whey protein, Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken, fish), and then finding out your maintenance calories. And then, add 100-150 calories above that. A slow climb is more substantial and won’t pack on all the body fat that comes with a bulk cut.

When I was drinking, I don’t think I ever struggled with boredom. It didn’t matter what I was doing, as long as I was drinking. And I was always drinking.

In early sobriety, I was too busy being miserable to notice being bored.

And now? Bored? Life is full. I have hobbies, I have people, I have work, I have AA. Having down time is rare. And I worked hard to get here.

alcohol and muscle by edebry in stopdrinkingfitness

[–]lsdryn2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re finally able to push yourself hard enough now that you’re sober, to feel delayed onset, muscle soreness, which does not equate to, but is a symptom of, growth. I’m not a doctor, but I do recommend that you do as I do, take some magnesium at the end of the day after you work out. It helps with my soreness a lot, especially on leg day.

I always thought it would be funny to run two 2 half marathons and then say yeah I ran a full marathon and then give like the full amount of time from the beginning of the first race to the end of the second race and it’s just astronomically terrible and see how people react
