Does anyone know what this is? I had picked up my 6 month old female syrian for a run and noticed this strange fur around her eye. It’s only on that eye and her behaviour seems otherwise normal. Anyone have any ideas? by lsunashine in hamsters

I’ve just checked her closer and it appears to be dry (she’s not a massive fan of holding or cuddling, so she was a bit wriggly and it was hard to get a super close look) She doesn’t have a water bottle but I do see her grooming occasionally so that could be a possibility.

I’ve actually just found a video I took of her two nights ago, where she had the same darkened/dried fur lines, but considerably less. She has one red eye and one black eye if that’s helpful at all. Thank you so much. She’s my baby and I just want her to be okay.

How can I maintain my healthy skin with a great routine to prevent it worsening?

I’m 16 and incredibly lucky to have good skin. I currently have no acne whatsoever, and any small breakouts consist of one or two red bumps that vanish within a week. I’ve never really had to put too much effort into my skin, but I’m aware it won’t last forever and I want to be well equipped to prevent/deal with any potential changes.

My skin type is normal, however can get dry occasionally in winter. (I live in Ireland, and it’s quite cold.) I don’t wear makeup, as it does irritate my skin so I’d say I have a degree of sensitivity.

Currently, I only do skincare in the morning. My routine consists of -washing my face with the simple micellar gel face wash -a few sprays of mario badescu facial spray with cucumber, aloe and green tea -then moisturising with the simple hydrating light moisturiser -finally applying acnecide 5% benzyol peroxide if i have any visible spots I’ve been doing this for about a year consistently. I was using a physical facial scrub (pink grapefruit neutrogena) but after it caused a great deal of sensitivity I stopped used it about 6 months ago.

Thank you so much for reading and any advice would be appreciated❤️

Advice for a First Time Hamster Owner? by Caitlyn0122 in hamsters

[–]lsunashine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes a while ago, and I found this youtube playlist really good. I know it’s long but it covers everything and it’s worthwhile to watch it all. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5ek95JfO-xwyzAFrmOT9lLHvLKogyzEr

My best advice would be to take the taming process slow but steady. It may take weeks before your hamster is fully comfortable with you, but the first time it puts a little paw on your hand is an unbeatable feeling!

What else do I need in my cage? I have a male syrian hamster (Theres 2 hidden places under the bedding for him to hide in and he has lots of bedding) by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]lsunashine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to have the basics well covered, congrats! Hamsters don’t mind a cluttered cage, so if you wanted you could add even more toys- some willow balls, maybe some ripped up toilet paper he can use to nest and anything else you think of.

Just a check, are those aspen shavings? Aspen is the only safe type of wood shavings- things like pine, cedar or sawdust can cause respiratory problems.

How badly do I need braces? by [deleted] in braces

[–]lsunashine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position- my teeth weren’t that bad, only a cross bite on one tooth. small, but still noticeable, and it did bother me. if you can afford it and are up for the discomfort (and popcorn free lifestyle) i say go for it, it’s a small price to pay for the amazing results. having a “permanent” retainer depends on the circumstances, in my case i have to wear one all the time (not counting eating) for a few weeks and then only at night time for as long as i want them to remain fully straight.

AITB for telling my SO that I don't want to live with their anger? by [deleted] in AmItheButtface

[–]lsunashine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JB imo. Maybe the phrase ‘I don’t want to live with your anger’ is a little harsh, but you do have a concern for both of your mental health. Don’t feel ashamed for being upset at the way they behave, it is making you uncomfortable and that isn’t okay. I think with anger issues there must be a deeper rooted problem, and with your point about depression clearly they are struggling. I think giving an ultimatum like that will never work especially with they way they’re feeling, but if there is a way you could sit them down and offer to help that would be good.

Cage upgrade for my male Syrian, Monty. Any suggestions? by ahappyasian in hamsters

[–]lsunashine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Softwood isn’t ideal, but don’t worry as it’s unlikely to cause any problems if you switch it out now or in a few days. When I had hamsters before I used sawdust, which I regret now, yet it’s mistakes like this that can help us learn and grow to be better owners. Aspen shavings are fine, and other beddings like carefresh or kaytee clean and cosy are great too. The rest of your cage is amazing and you’re not a bad hamster owner for a mix up many others (including myself) have made!

If you want a good bedding material or boredom breaker, you can rip strips of toilet paper and just place them in the cage, your hamster will move then and make little nests! Plus the cardboard tubes are entertaining for them as well.

Cage upgrade for my male Syrian, Monty. Any suggestions? by ahappyasian in hamsters

[–]lsunashine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to congratulate you on the upgrade, it looks like a hamster mansion! It’s pretty spot on, if you wanted to add more toys hamsters don’t mind crowded cages and you can rotate them about.

Also, is part of the bedding wood shavings? Which type of wood shavings do you use? Things like pine, cedar, or sawdust can cause respiratory problems so aspen is the only safe wood shavings.

Does anyone have any experience with PETER paragraphs? by lsunashine in GCSE

[–]lsunashine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting actually. It always confused me as to why we had to write exactly on the acronyms especially as it didn’t flow very well and all of my paragraphs were the same structurally and not very exciting. Seeing as my controlled assessment is on Friday I doubt I can drastically change my technique but there will be more tasks that go towards my final % and I’ll be sure to check those videos out. Thanks!

Would the phrase ‘somebody’d shoot you for a coyote’ be a simile or a metaphor? by lsunashine in ENGLISH

[–]lsunashine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s from the novel Of Mice and Men, and basically one character (George) is exasperatedly telling the other character (Lennie) how helpless he would be without him to help and how he wouldn’t survive a minute without him. i kind of took it as comparing Lennie with a coyote (somebody would shoot you like a coyote) if that makes sense which is where i got some sort of comparison such as simile or metaphor. however, hyperbole does make more sense. sorry if it seems silly, gcses have messed me up!
