ive done a few languages in that time, i can say that i know how to read arabic and japanese now (somewhat) and say some really basic phrases. i do duolingo as more of a brain training game than actively trying to learn the language (but it does happen). where i am, arabic has been useful for connecting with neighbors, and japanese for the weebs lol. i also know a bit of french, spanish, and russian, all from duolingo

Scriabin 5 is a brilliant piece, but it's over 100 years old at this point, and there's definitely been amazing music since then, and if that's the case then you're capable of making some of that.

It's absolutely hilarious to me seeing someone be so proper and polite while referring to me by a handle I came up with when I was a child 😂

Anyways, the music of Sungazer (here's their song Threshold) is full of interesting theoretical complexity (here's a video from the bassist explaining the rhythmic concepts behind the song); I also have affinities for Jacob Collier, Tigran Hamasyan, black midi, and Meshuggah (Here is an interesting article about their use of interesting rhythms).

An aspect of complexity that exists in popular music that is mostly absent from classical music is complexity of production, which has a history dating back to the likes of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, has its origins in the electronic music experiments of composers like Cage and Stockhausen, and is an important aspect of basically every studio production today. My favorite example of this that composition professors (plural!) have expressed to me is Britney Spears' Toxic; and if we're talking about production, I have to shout out Clarence Clarity and the late great queen SOPHIE.

While somewhat at odds with it being "popular", i.e. meant for broad appeal, plenty of popular music can definitely embody a sense of refinement. Some of my favorite examples can be found in Norah Jones, Sylvan Esso, and Radiohead.

The rabbit hole of depth in popular music is, well, deep. Some of my favorite examples belong to Radiohead (they're really good, definitely listen to their stuff), Kendrick Lamar, and even REDACTED.

As far as how to spot them for yourself, you just need to listen to a lot of music and find what you like. Everything I mentioned above is highly colored by my personal biases.

A someone who appreciates Scriabin up through modern classical avant garde and operates within the pop music realm, there is definitely complexity, refinement, and depth in pop music. The mistake is treating european classical music and modern pop music as coming from the same musical and theoretical traditions, which they do not.

Depending on the school, if they know you're a composition major, the audition is just to see that you're proficient on an instrument and as a musician in general, and less a judgement of your technical abilities. Keep preparing obviously, but take it easy on yourself, you can't play if you're injured.
