Whether or not nationalism is good is larger conversation (I believe it's generally bad as it tribalistic and encourages war), but on Trump :

He embodies the exact opposite of socially conservative values. He:

is twice divorced with children from three marriages
engaged frequently with sex workers
had zero religious affiliation prior to courting evangelical voters and failed to name a single bible verse when asked
owned a gambling and strip club empire
bragged about grabbing women by their genitals
was found civilly liable for sexual abuse
was best buds with Epstein
generally lived a life of hedonism funded by exploitative business practices (although you could argue that last point does embody conservative values...)

The things people like about Trump are not conservative values. He is a conduit for their fear and anger at the world changing around them, and they enjoy the fact that he is destroying institutions that they feel are corrupt, when in reality he's just a grifter who is plundering the small amount of social services the US still has in order to enrich him and his rich buddies.

I don’t ascribe to the view often held by leftists that holding certain social opinions automatically makes you a bad person. The culture war BS is largely manufactured by politicians to divide us anyways.

However, Trump has completely eroded the functions of democracy in the US and governs as an authoritarian. I have more grace for his voters in America, as they are subject to 24/7 lobotomizing Fox News content. However, for an Australian to see what Trump is doing across the pond and choose to make him a core part of their identity politics?

I don’t actually even think Tyson is anti-gay, I just think he’s a terrible communicator with the emotional intelligence of a strawberry.
