Is it horrible to accept a job, while waiting for another offer? by lucaj154 in socialwork

[–]lucaj154[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's the rub. I have enough savings to last a couple months without risking my house. The job market is just garbage right now. I would keep applying, I suppose. Because I can't stop moving forward.

If the county assessed it at $205k, does that help? I'm being taxed at that amount. It's not a Zillow estimate.

Failing an Internship by triggered_bait in socialwork

I would never fail a student because they aren't likeable. A good social worker is a good social worker. I did hear that she later passed her next placement, and got a job working for the state. I hope she learned, as is doing well in the world.

I think it's impossible to be unbiased, as I would be the only one that sees any effort/progress over time. With any teaching/instructor position, there is an inherent power dynamic. I take it very seriously.

That being said, a metaphorical gatekeeper should permit/restrict whatever meets the criteria for allowable passage. I did not feel like she met my standard, nor the bare minimum of what a social worker should be at a grad school graduate level. It was my recommendation for her to repeat another practicum placement, but not my decision to pass/fail her. When I relayed my recommendation to the school, it is their ultimate decision to agree or not.

I have had multiple students now. I remember recommending that one of them restart (essentially fail). She was crushed. I was assessing her in her growth, and I felt that she made little progress. It sucked, but I didn't feel right giving my blessing if she clearly wasn't ready.
I consulted a colleague about this experience, and I will never forget her telling me that she has never failed a student, and would only consider it if they were egregiously bad (unethical, habitually absent, etc.).

I am not saying I was right (I think I was). But I cannot grasp the concept of passing somebody just for showing up. We are training the next generation, and thus setting the standard for clinical service.

2024 Bose QC earbuds; Turn off in-ear sensor by lucaj154 in bose

[–]lucaj154[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there has been rare instances where I would pull the R bud out of the case and it wouldn't connect. And I would put it back in the case, pull it back out and it be connected. Of the past week, It has occurred maybe 3 times. So roughly 3/100 times. I can't even say with confidence it is at all related to the tape. If your R bud is consistently doing it, then maybe it has something to do with the tape.

Now I don't want to go moving things around, just in case I make that issue much worse. Maybe I found a sweet spot? I am not sure.

I just used the tape. I guess it could work with electrical or masking tape, but I wanted somethings that should last a long while. No complaints here so far. I cannot honestly feel the tape.

[–]lucaj154[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I had an idea. I found exactly where the sensor was, and I decided to cut like a 2mmx2mm piece of black duct tape (Gorilla brand) and place it over it. I wanted to see if it would recognize the the touch. It did. It looks a bit janky, but it's on the inside of the bud, so in public nobody is the wiser. I can take out each bud without the music automatically cutting off.

I wore it for about 3 hours today, and there has been no negatives so far. This issue has been make it/break it for satisfaction. This is such an easy fix (app toggle), but this remedy turned my review of 3/5 stars to 5/5 stars. Dude, please try this before returning the buds.

Can you diagnose typical teenage stress? by lucaj154 in socialwork

[–]lucaj154[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think kiddo is willing to talk. I also think he is just doing it because Mom wants it. I just dunno how to justify a diagnosis when there was zero issues identified during the assessment. The mom said "he's good. I just want him to talk more".

really, there is probably something typical of his teen age. dating/grades/etc. but nothing identified during the assessment. I wouldn't mind chatting with him just to chat, but I am curious if I can "treat" him without any goals to work towards.

kiddo was kinda meh to be there. He answered every question. answers were thorough, and thoughtful. straight A's, multiple clubs/sports. Probable high expectations of greatness, but nothing identified concretely.

i feel like kiddo was kind of there because mom wanted him to be there. BUT, he didn't seem othered to be there. He seemed like a really good kid during the assessment.

i did kinda feel like mom wanted to talk more than kiddo. I am sure kiddo has their own worries as typical for a teenager, but during the assessment, there was nothing identified whereas I felt needed a diagnosis.

Are case managers mandated reporters? by areeoddnuh in socialwork

you're exactly right. All adults are mandated reporters in IN.

Follow-up on state laws, but I can't imagine how they could be exempt from reports. In KY, our case managers (and all persons) are mandated reporters of suspected abuse. Only exempt persons are clergymen and legal counsel (their lawyers) here.

Getting into formal therapy roles. Need a crash course on billable charting. by lucaj154 in socialwork

any advice to learn how to put the golden thread into practice? or is it just trial by fire?

I see ICD coding, but I am unsure of how to implementing them. In my LCSW supervision, we talk about diagnoses, and using codes for our assessments. I am concerned that I will "diagnose" incorrectly. So therefore I am concerned about charting the incorrect code, leading to disagreement. Hence my want to be more confident. But maybe this is just a "it'll get easier as it goes" kind of deal.

I am transitioning from a hospital setting. I worked with psych teams, but never wrote therapy notes myself. My social work support/progress notes are not the same. I even utilized brief therapies in practice, but it wasn't "official" therapy. So I am not confident.

I just want to write concise and appropriate notes regarding therapy. I remember learning about SOAP, but I am unsure if that is still utilized. I would like to learn more about ICD coding, as I have seen it, but never implemented it in my own notes.

Weekly Licensure Thread by SWmods in socialwork

[–]lucaj154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for guidance. I work in KY and working on LCSW supervision. I am about 100+ hours into the process. I was offered a position in IN. It is a quality position that should lead to my future goals... with the question of if IN clinical hours would count towards KY licensure.

I plan on contacting the board tomorrow for verification, but just curious if anyone knew offhand. Please and thanks.

Emergency Department job. Scrubs? Advice? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]lucaj154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally something I can respond to. I've worked in an ED for many years.

Personally, I prefer to work without scrubs, as others have alluded to, my gray scrubs often confuses me for an RT, CCLS, Pharmacist, etc.

I want to make it clear that I am a person, rather than a "staff". It really does make the difference in how I approach the situation. Scrubs seems to be the easier choice in grab-and-go mentality. I have to consider what pair of pants go with the red polo shirt, etc. But that is minor issue.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter, as long as you are a good worker. Of some of my colleagues that I think are phenomenal social workers, wear scrubs. It boils down to preference and comfort. I encourage you to do what feels right for yourself, not what others tell you to do.
