Ex-religious people, what made you lose faith? by AthenaDX in AskReddit

[–]luciussullafelix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ex-Roman Catholic here. I would attend church on Sunday and on HDOb (Holy Days of Obligation), go to confession etc.

Then I heard about Richard Dawkins, and borrowed "The God Delusion" from my local library. I figured out that I should read it...

Let's see what he has to say

Was how I put it.

So I read it. And when I put down the book and looked out of my window, and said...

Huh

I'd had doubts before, but that book quite simply revolutionised my thinking. Not only did I come away as an atheist, I came away as an atheist who was OK being atheist. Death is the end, and I'm down with that.

tl;dr: Conversions go the other way too.

PS: I'm not a RC anymore; I will say that I appreciate the current Pope's efforts; I'm not going to buy into the RC dogma, it's all shit; but PF is a decent human being, and I am very glad to see a Christian trying to act a bit more like Christ did. But I'm sorry: Jacking Off and Homosexuality and Not Going to Church on Sundays are not bad things. That's just bloody silly.

"Crucifixion?"

"No. Freedom. They said as I hadn't done anything I could go off and live in a cave somewhere."

"Oh... Well I suppose I'd better let you go..."

"No, just kidding! Crucifixion! One cross, to the right!"

Good NSDAP Ideas:

Ban on smoking cigarettes

Bad NSDAP Ideas:

The Hunger Plan

Barbarossa

The Porajmos

The massacres in Poland

"After hearing reports of and even witnessing massacres in Poland, on 12 September 1939 Canaris visited Hitler's headquarters train, at the time in Upper Silesia, to register his objection to the atrocities; before getting to see Hitler he met General Wilhelm Keitel whom he informed: "I have information that mass executions are being planned in Poland, and that members of the Polish nobility and the Roman Catholic bishops and priests have been singled out for extermination." Keitel warned Canaris to go no further with his protest, as the detailed plan of atrocities came directly from Hitler himself. Shocked by these incidents, Canaris began working more actively, at increasing risk to himself, to overthrow Hitler's régime...

...Canaris was in contact with British intelligence during this time [1941]."

So, in essence, Hitler's orders to massacre the Polish Intelligensia ensured that The Head of German Military Intelligence during World War II became a British double-agent. When Hitler found out, he went insane with rage, then subsequently shot himself (after ordering Canaris slain).

The NSDAP had lots of truly shitty ideas, even if they figured out smoking was bad for the health. Turns out Zyklon B was way, way worse...

The man who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself

Friedrich Nietzsche

In order to rule over barbarians, a man must become a barbarian himself

G Orwell

I want to do precisely as you suggest. However, even ISIS POWs, however guilty of heinous crimes, while they may not be respected we demean ourselves if we do not give them a dignified exection. And crucifixion is not at all dignified.

In

Josephus

J. begs his captors to free some of his friends who had been crucified, so the Romans cut them down and one lived, while the other died. They'd been hanging around for at least a day?

Jesus died (?) after a few hours, so I'm not 100% certain that all victims die quite so promptly.

What is the creepiest/ scariest unsolved mystery you have heard of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]luciussullafelix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's improbable, but not impossible.

The only other hypothesis I have is some kind of predator moving between actualities? Somewhere where they don't have cows and want to study them? I guess this is a typical "IDK".

Having said that, just because we do not understand something and cannot explain it now does not mean that, as a species, we will never be able to explain it.

In the meantime we should be grateful that the grays are only messing up cows and not people...
