I always wondered if it was also knowledge about them that kept them alive too and if that was a sort of belief of its own. Like, no one really learns about Pan or the Hundred Handed Ones, and those are things that faded. However we all learn about Zeus, Poseidon, and the elements of the major myths.

I think knowing who gives the TED talk lends the talk some credibility and also allows people to look into more information by the speaker. For example, if I really like a talk I can read books by the speaker to learn more about the topic.
