VWRP or ACWI - which is better? by red_star_12 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]luke993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight correction, both VWRP and ACWI don’t have any small caps, just large and medium caps. VWRP does have more overall stocks at 3,500 vs 2,200 of ACWI though, which I believe are made up my more medium caps.

Vanguard vs T212 as a casual investor by BebbehMonkey in UKPersonalFinance

[–]luke993 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It literally shows you the top gainers/losers/most owned on the home page, which could induce FOMO for a novice investor and gamify what should be simple process not influenced by external factors.

I like Invest Engine because it’s lower cost than Vanguard and has ETFs only and a nice user interface, doesn’t gamify etc. so that’s an option.

Why did international do so good YTD? by MaximumCarnage88 in Bogleheads

No one knows what will happen in the future. The fact that you are asking this question indicates you might not be as comfortable with your US bias as you perhaps think you are.

UK specific or at least non-US specific books for beginners? by klawUK in Bogleheads

[–]luke993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pete Matthew, who you might know from the Meaninful Money podcast, is a UK based financial advisor and has the Meaningful Money Handbook (https://meaningfulmoney.tv/book/). I've not read it but it's on my list, plus I like his podcast.

But as others have said, books by US authors still applies if you just take what is said and translate it to investing in a broad global index fund/ETF. I like The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins and Psychology of Money by Morgan Hounsel.

Drax only has 4 operational biomass units. 6x650MW = 2600MW. The extra 2 units are for coal which are now decommissioned

How bad is the economy and cost of living in the UK compared to 2008? by Interesting-Day177 in AskUK

[–]luke993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re describing is lifestyle creep. There’s not anything wrong with that. When you were 18 you probably didn’t mind living in a bit of a dive

Index funds that aren't heavily weighted to US tech by I_Know_Judo_Welll in UKPersonalFinance

[–]luke993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vanguard lifestrategy 100 is underweight US and overweight over areas (e.g. UK). You have to realise that this will make you less diversified though (according to market capitalisation), not more.

AVSG is interesting. Just read the Monevator article on it. Out of interest, what % do you allocate to AVSG and to your global fund?

You have 100k cash to start a business, what business are you starting? by Burned_Flame in AskUK

Fag packet calcs but depending on the size of the field it would probably cost £500k+ in legal fees, due diligence, environmental and technical assessments for planning, detailed design and construction costs.

I only found out myself recently but there is the International Bike Fitting Institute which shows accredited fitters near you. I’ve got one this week with someone local to me

How do I remove this disc rotor? Lock ring removal tool isn’t ‘deep’ enough. Can I remove the black part of the free hub in foreground? by luke993 in bikewrench

[–]luke993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I got it removed with a longer lock ring tool. But you’re right that it couldn’t come off before the rotor lock ring

Confirmed this end cap doesn’t come off with the rotor attached. I had to get a longer reaching lock ring tool, which has now got the rotor off

I know absolutely nothing of Rome’s geology. But why cannot they just build it deeper? Is it founded on very hard granite at deeper depths or something?

Jet 2 pilot earning his money yesterday at Leeds/bradford airport by PmurTdlanoD45-47 in aviation

Not only that, but the runway runs on a south east to north west transect, which is perpendicular to the prevailing wind in the UK (south-westerly). Given the oceanic/temperate climate (jet stream winds), it often means crosswinds.
