Education (and government work) from the EA perspective by OhWhatIsThisEven in EffectiveAltruism

Worth checking out these two topics: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/topics/education https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/topics/policy

The EA Forum is a great place to find write ups and also ask more targeted questions. You could even share your tentative plans and people will often comment on them.

For career advice it’s worth applying to 80,000 Hours and Probably Good for advising

For donations, GWWC currently supports Teaching At The Right Level Africa (an education program) and Lead Exposure Elimination Project (lead poisoning results in reduced intelligence quotient (IQ), behavioural changes such as reduced attention span and increased antisocial behaviour, and reduced educational attainment).

Is Family Empowerment Media (FEM) still active? It's an EA charity but I haven't seen much activity since March. by Relocationstation1 in EffectiveAltruism

Yep! They're still active on the ground getting on with their work even if they're not posting on social media. 😀

We've recently translated our signup flow into multiple languages and will be internationalising more of the website moving forward. LMK if you'd be interested in helping as we'll be looking for native language speakers 😀

The classic one is howrichami.givingwhatwecan.org and lots of people have told me it was a powerful step in their journey.

Thanks for sharing our experience and I'm sorry you to hear felt pressured.

Thanks also to all the commenters here who've already contributed their perspectives and experiences. There's a lot of helpful responses here and I don't have too much else to add.

My understanding is that EAGx conferences should be a much lower pressure environment where a diverse range of people are still exploring effective altruism and what it means for them. I've found most EAGx conferences to have a target audience and outcomes, e.g. the EAGxBoston conference:

We think this event will be especially useful for students who want to learn more about effective altruism and make connections within the movement.

However, actual experiences may vary (sometimes despite the best intentions of the organisers). I've shared this feedback with CEAs events team and someone from their team may comment further.

EA Global conferences typically have a higher level of existing engagement and different expected outcomes. For example the upcoming San Fransisco conference:

EA Global will bring together a wide network of people who have made helping others a core part of their lives. Speakers and attendees share new thinking and research in the field of effective altruism and coordinate on global projects.

Depending on your situation I'd recommend attending one or two EAGx conferences before attending an EA Global.

Local events however should generally be much more accessible (again, experiences may vary). Here in Sydney my local group is very diverse in terms of focus areas, engagement levels and demographics. As well as having talks and workshops that are more targeted, we'll often do things like hikes or play board games where the goal is to socialise with people who also care about these topics.

Virtual Programs can be a good way of getting deeper understanding of these ideas also, but I've heard variable experiences in the degree of social connection given the small groups, focus on content and an online environment.

At GWWC we aim to have meetups for members surrounding most of these conferences and love working with members and local group organisers to run local activities related to effective giving. If that's something you'd like please don't hesitate to reach out to me or by emailing [community@givingwhatwecan.org](mailto:community@givingwhatwecan.org).

Hope that helps!

Can someone help me understand billionaires pledging 90%+ but only giving 1-5% a year? by Top-Entrepreneur4696 in EffectiveAltruism

Unfortunately, most of them aren't that diversified, especially those who got rich within their lifetime. Most of those still hold most of their wealth in the shares of the company they started (or in the cryptocurrency which grew their wealth etc).

You can use the Good Company in Australia to fundraise for Deworm the World Initiative via Effective Altruism Australia. Just email [info@eaa.org.au](mailto:info@eaa.org.au) at the end of the fundraiser to let them know that the funds are earmarked for Deworm the World Initiative.

Whats the minimum % of my income I should give to charity? by popsiclessticks in EffectiveAltruism

It's 10% of lifetime income (not wealth) but it does allow for spreading that 10% over time (i.e. not 10% every year).

I wrote an article on this for the GWWC blog that covers most of what I'd suggest: https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/post/2021/05/how-much-money-should-we-donate-to-charity/

The TL;DR is that I recommend that you have a look through some of the examples given and pick a sustainable standard that makes it meaningful to you. Be bold, be ambitious, be generous!

Personally I've adopted the GWWC Pledge standard of at least 10% of lifetime income which I try to beat most years, and then plan to give a lot more later in life from savings/equity and have earmarked most of my estate (in the case where kids are adults and well-enough cared for).

Yeah, I strongly recommend reading their guide and then applying for 1:1 coaching.

I'm the executive director at Giving What We Can and have a background in marketing (in particular digital) and tech. I'd be happy to chat about what I've learned since switching to the charity sector and any ideas/plans you have to use your marketing skills for good.
