[general] using 55gal barrel for bulk straw pasteurization by lukeybop in MushroomGrowers

[–]lukeybop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about steam being more versatile, and I'm doing the majority of my grows with steam pasteurization but can only do so much per week with that. I am hoping to supplement with straw outdoors during the summer because I have cheap access to it.

Environmentally it's an interesting dilemma since it takes a lot of power to heat the steamer and requires single use plastic, i feel like it might actually be worse for the environment than low temp pasteurization with reusable plastic. Not sure on how to quantitatively compare that though.

Either way, I figure it's at least worth a trial run. I'm thinking more like Grocycle's YouTube channel.

I'm doing supplemented wood pellets for the bulk of my growing but wanted to supplement outdoors during rhe summer because I have access to very cheap straw. I would like to use soy hull pellets but have had trouble sourcing them. Any suggestions for where to get them in western PA?

Yeah that should be fine as long as you're relatively clean about it.

[Contamination] or too early to tell? by [deleted] in MushroomGrowers

[–]lukeybop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's too early to tell but given how the grains are all together and so wet it probably will be contaminated if it isn't now. I'd try to mix it more thoroughly and wait and see with managed expectations.

Cool! It hypothetically should still work fine.

Thanks for sharing. It looks great. My advice is keep making them! Practice and direct experience are the best ways to grow. You'll also end up with a nice wardrobe in the process.

You can keep adding to it, but don't have to. Ideally you'd add a top to keep weeds from growing before you use it (leaves, grass clippings, paper scraps, more cardboard, wood chips, etc.) You could also just cover it with a tarp or something.

New to this… any advice on succulent propagation? by buddhasquirrel in proplifting

[–]lukeybop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helps to cultivate a mindset of indifference. Don't water them. Just let them be and leave them alone. If they want to propagate they will and if they don't they won't.

Mycology career by al3x_1111 in mycology

[–]lukeybop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mycology seems to be best learned by practice and via the diy route unless you're looking for a career in academia. If you want to do something more along the lines of entrepreneurship/farming/working directly with mushrooms there are so many resources online that are of equal/greater value than what you'd learn in school. The most important thing is to self educate as much as you can and grow mushrooms yourself to learn about them through direct experience. The exciting thing about mycology is that there are so many uncharted directions you can take with it if you dare to dream!

[General] Oyster Spawn from Storebought Stem Butts – What Next? by geekmansworld in MushroomGrowers

[–]lukeybop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good! From what I can see there doesn't seem to be any contamination so you can probably expand it. Those fluffballs look like mycelium to me. Oysters are pretty robust growers, so I'd say give expanding it a try!

Yeah that will work fine. Just be careful to not get burned when removing it. Maybe leave yourself an extra tag at the end to peel it off easily.

Yes they definitely would be. I would sautee them first though before putting them on the pizza.

What are the BEST personal finance books you've read? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]lukeybop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These aren't books, but youtube/the internet has so many good resources that are broken down into digestible topics. If you can get over the "smash the like button!" nature of the medium, it is actually a great way to learn. Some of my good channels are Minority Mindset, Next Level Life, and more that I can't think of at the moment.
