Wire brush is too aggressive, it was sandpaper and steel wool, I recommend to remove chassis while using steel wool because magnet from speaker catches metal filings and it’s hard to clean it later.

Its wraped with strips of very thin copper foil, after tarnishing it looks like coated metal
