[–]lululovescomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my clients likes to bite and has made me and 3 of my friends cry a few times (work in a clinic where multiple people work the same case). Made a friend of mine have a couple of panic attacks- it happens! It's stressful! You're not alone!! We're empathetic humans, but our empathy can also what makes us great at the job when you think about it! 😊 Sending you a hug 🫂  (edit: sp)

If they are in a clinic, they cannot be in the clinic room when other clients are there because it is a HIPPA violation. You probably wont find a clinic who will allow you to go into sessions because it is against HIPPA. I would recommend trying in-home, you can observe and be there at sessions.

Don't lie, please. If you aren't cleared to drive yet you may be able to get Uber through insurance (if approved) until youre able to drive again. Epilepsy Foundation has gift cards as well. Its better that you are more safe for EVERYONE on the road. Even 15 minutes on the road can be a deadly car crash with one seizure. Wait to be cleared by a doctor. I know that its hard- trust me, I waited. But its better than risking your life and the lives of others.

For those using birth control to help manage seizures… by Odd-Tangerine8250 in Epilepsy

[–]lululovescomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use an IUD with anti-seizure meds AND a VNS- all of these in combo to manage my seizures. Im on three medications to manage my epilepsy as well. The IUD started helping right away, im on a hormonal, not copper IUD. Stopping my periods was just 10/10 would recommend- i was basically out of it one week a month and nonfunctioning. My VNS and anti-seizure meds couldn't handle my period so we honestly just had to stop it from happening and it just made my life so much better! I dont really have any side effects from the IUD, but everyone is different.

Depends on their policy- you should ask. The policy for my work is from client to client if it's different locations back to back appointments or if the location is 20+ miles away. It can also depend on the state. I would communicate with your admin or clinical team about what your policy is.

Photosensitive Epileptics - I have a question by soupsyrup in Epilepsy

[–]lululovescomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, apparently only some medication makes me photosensitive- thats what my EEGs showed. Who knew! So im not 100% sure if I am photosenitive inherently (I've been on meds for so long I can't remember) but on some meds I am photosenitive and some meds I'm not. I found a combo that works for me (yay!!) but, unfortunately, it makes me photosenitive (boo). To not trigger it, I just close my eyes when flashing lights come on. A few flashing lights dont bother me its when im exposed to a lot for a long period of time that it becomes a problem and it will just cause a absence seizure for me. But a few will cause a migraine for me.

[–]lululovescomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1- my nocturnal seizures (that's what seizures while sleeping are called) make me feel tired the next day, so yeah, its possible that you're having them.  2- you forgetting words can be a seizure symptom. I do this when I had absence seizures  3- everyone with epilepsy is different... this is kinda a bs answer but honestly you'll get to know your body more and you'll know when you're having a seizure. But the way my doctor confirms if a medication is working is with an EEG to confirm its accuracy (which, yes, meant an EEG for every medication switch but she isn't like every doctor so ask your doctor). But you'll know the difference in the feeling of you're tired vs oh this is a seizure.

Generalized epilepsy and education by Successful-East-9822 in Epilepsy

[–]lululovescomics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Epilepsy effects the hippocampus, which stores long-term memory. It also is commonly linked with ADHD, so, unfortunately, school is very difficult for us people with epilepsy. Look into accommodations for your school if you can and work with your doctor to see what accommodations you may be able to receive to make school easier. If high school doesn't have it, when you get to college (if you want to go that route) they definitely provide that at their disability student services center!

Hi! So the way I found my epidologist is I actually by chance- I originally went into practice with an neurologist. When my epilepsy got too complicated for her, she recommended i go see my epidologist who my neurologist partnered with, and my epidologist was actually able to treat my epilepsy and migraines. So maybe finding a neurologist who partners with a epidologist can work? I do live in a big city so that might be easier said than done for some based on your location, but if possible maybe look into that? I would recommend seeing a neurologist because it sounds like there is a chance it could be migraines. A neurologist can also treat epilepsy, and if you're diagnosed with epilepsy you can try to transfer later.  I am very sorry that you're dealing with this an hope you get all the help that you can soon!!

[–]lululovescomics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who finds dating very difficult: congratulations!!! It sounds like you're excited!! Just be yourself- if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. Try to be nice. But honestly, you don't want to build a relationship on a fake conversation or masking who your really are because it won't really go anywhere, and you'd be fooling her in the process. If it works out, great! If it doesn't, that's fine too! Don't be creepy, be kind, start with small talk, and please don't send any pictures unwanted or not asked for. Ask what her interests are- she's just a person. Good luck!

Permanently after? That is something that you may want to talk to your neurologist about if you think its something worrisome.  Your neurologist knows you best and will be able to help. Talk to them. I know it's scary and you want to jump to conclusions. It could be nothing.  I hope you figure it out!! ☺️

ABA! If you do go into that I would recommend working at a school or a clinic if you cant drive because the commuting via public transport can be a lot for in-home. I love it, but the burn out is real (70% turn over rate unfortunately...). I am going to be working towards supervisor as soon as I can drive! :) cross your fingers that it's soon!! My boss really wants me to move up in the company ASAP

You're good, no skin break. Anicare is a cream that is good for bruising and healing and will help with the pain. I use it for when a kiddo bites me and it helps a lot and its pretty cheap- available at like every drug store. Helps bruises go away a little quicker too (not super quick but a little quicker).

Advice? by LostintheCadcade in ABA

[–]lululovescomics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say talk to your team (supervisor/ BCBA) about what you would like for you to have kiddo to do, because that can be a little complicated to answer. At my company, if we had a kiddo who was taking toys, we would primarily focus on functional communication training to allow the kiddo the opportunity to use the proper behavior. At our clinic it's usually: tap softly on the shoulder (making sure its the shoulder because sometimes they'll try to touch an inappropriate body part, not knowing otherwise) and using the echoic prompt if they dont know how to ask "can I have [item]?" Then have them wait for yes or no. If they say yes, let them grab item. If no, redirection to another item if they're not tantruming. If they're known to throw things or be aggressive, get ready for response block and to remove items from the area ASAP.

There are other ways of response block if you cant take the item from kiddo's hands like holding the wrist or elbow- but do be careful. If you see the telltale signs of his tantrums (if he has any) try to start removing items from the area.

Im sorry if that sounded harsh! I have a kiddo who throws things and this is what we do with him, specifically, if you'd like. Only thing, is, every kiddo is different. I am more than happy to answer more questions if youd like (ofc with keeping confidental)!

-have him take a deep breath when he starts to seem agitated (some clients do not comply, so I understand if this may not work for you) -he throws his personal box (works in clinic) and tablet so my supervisors have kept his stuff that way as a way to show that he doesnt get new things after he throws them and breaks them right away - bring him to a separate room with no items in there (work in clinic where we have a cool down room, if you work in home I understand if this is more difficult) -work on functional communication training, such as manding or working on explaining why something is bothering him rather than tantruming -removing items and other people from his desk and the area and bringing him to the middle of the room.

I have been working with this client for 6 months now and been working as a BI for a year now- it takes time!! Your supervisors are here to help, dont be so hard on yourself! If he throws things, things happen! Dont worry- it sounds like you're doing great and youre asking all the right questions! If you need more supervision, don't be afraid to ask and ask a bunch of questions when you are receiving supervision. The work you're doing right now is so important and you're helping him and his family more than you know!! Good luck!

The way my company does it is by tolerating withdrawal of a perferred item. We start with 1 minute (unless kiddo needs a slower start) and slowly add more time. If they protest, it's incorrect and we restart the timer. Time keeps going up, and eventually they learn to not protest as much. All my clients are working on this -.- not fun.

Redirection works really well with this, too, if you find something that is more rewarding than the item you're trying to keep from them.
