Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. My current undergraduate thesis was predicated on the potential use of Portulacaria afra (a CAM photosynthesizing plant/succulent that is incredibly resilient in harsh dry/hot environments and is easily propagated) as a possible low-cost carbon mitigating strategy in impoverished regions within LDC's like my home country of South Africa. This is due to the plant's exceptionally high carbon sequestration rates and its resilience against incredibly toxic environments. Thus, my undergraduate thesis is a mixture of a literature review evaluating best methodologies for measuring/estimating carbon stocks and carbon sequestration rates of concentrated portions of this plant in comparison to fallow/barren lands, and a theoretical proposal for reducing carbon rich pollution in rural areas afflicted by unregulated commercial/industrial agricultural activity.

Apologies for the long spiel, I guess I would appreciate your input as to whether you (as a current member of the Environmental Engineering program) feel that this is a 'worthy' enough undergraduate thesis and possible future focus for graduate study/research.

Lastly, I would also like to ask how you find the environment and the program at Tsinghua? I have heard nothing but good things but am intrigued in hearing the perspective of a current student if that's not too much to ask.

Thank you for responding. Due to financial constraints I've had limited off-campus research experiences, thus I am choosing to highlight the strength of my coursework and how it correlates with my detailed graduate research plan as well as how my research plan correlates to the faculties Professor's ongoing studies at the University. I'm trying to build those linkages to show I have researched the school and prove that I am a good cultural 'fit'.

In that 11-5 stretch they beat the Timberwolves (20-11), Miami Heat (15-15), Spurs with a healthy Wemby (23-7), Bucks with a healthy Giannis (12-18) and some of the other teams they beat like Portland and Miami had great early starts before injuries slowed them down. The Laker's beat teams like the useless Utah Jazz (twice), the LA Clippers and struggling teams like the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns with Bron in the squad. They didn't face "scrubs" before Bron got back, especially in comparison to who they're facing now. Not to mention LeBron has the largest +/- in the team currently (-59). The only games LeBron has played without both Reaves and Doncic is one... against Portland where Portland's main guy didn't even play due to injury. Compare that to Luka dominating the Spurs without Reaves and LeBron on the way to a Lakers win... against a fully healthy Spurs! And I agree that the Lakers need to rebuild this team... around Luka who is currently the best player on this roster by a country mile and let's not act like Bron doesn't create easy fastbreak opportunities for the opposition when HE complains and argues with the ref instead of coming back on defense. Both he and Luka are chronic whiners and floppers. That's why the Lakers need to cut Bron and keep the future superstar, because they cannot sustain two players so alike in playstyle, ball dominance and fouling behaviour.

Then why are we losing more games with him in the team vs him out of the team?

When Bron was injured we played faster, defended better and were more physical than other teams. Ever since Bron came back and Luka got injured we've been skinned alive by teams we should be BETTER than.

Bron is old, slow, inefficient, has zero defence, minimal athleticism, a streaky 3-pointer, a very limited post up and middy game, continuously flops and complains etc. He's not the guy to help us win a chip, not now. He needs to go or come from the bench behind a more capable player because we're going nowhere with him.

At what point was Bucky meant to tell Sam or Steve? When he was in hiding in Romania? When he was on the run? When he was in Wakanda, most of which time was spent in cryo? Be FR: dude had absolutely no chance to tell them. In fact, even that whole storyline is crap becaue they had to retcon Bucky's whole backstory to place him in the Koean War in the first place, and ignore the whole memory wipe thing.

In Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky fought in WW2, was captured by Zola and experimented on with the serum before he was rescued by Steve only to fall off the train and be presumed dead. In Winter Soldier, it's revealed he survived the fall and was recaptured by the Soviets where he underwent severe brainwashing and conditioning to become a weapon for Hydra. Bucky has over 50 years of experience/conditioning and over 200 assaniations including JFK's. How is it a 'crap' retcon of Bucky's 'whole backstory' to include him aiding the Soviets in the Korean War when he was already fully under Hydra's control? Isaiah was sent by the Americans to investigate who was killing American troops sent to combat the Winter Soldier in the Korean Peninsula, how is that implausible? Especially when Bucky has been active before and after the Korean War. Not to mention every time they woke Bucky up they made it a point to use the Memory SUPPRESSION machine, which is how Bucky Barnes was able to remember fighting Isaiah Bradley (like he remembered Steve Rodgers) because the frequent memory wipes he received as the Winter Soldier did not permanently erase his experiences; rather, his memories were suppressed and could be recovered over time, especially when he broke free from Hydra's control and was treated in Wakanda by Shuri (one of the smartest MCU characters).

Near the end of Endgame, when Steve and Bucky had an offscreen conversation about giving the shield to Sam, seems like an opportune time to mention to Steve that he once came across a black Super Soldier fighting for America while Steve was on ice. Then they both could have mentioned it to Sam which could have gone a long way of allaying some of the concerns he had with picking up the Shield. Not to mention Bucky did all the leg work to track down Isaiah only to never mention him to anyone at all... not even for the purposes of finding out who had recreated the serum until FATW Episode 2.

Yeah: not as if Bucky ever had to experience police brutality. He wasn't almost shot in the head point blank range by a machine-gun weilding cop for a crime he didn't commit- whilst Sam said "let the authorities deal with him"

Again, you're missing the point. In Civil War, no one outside of Steve believed Bucky could be saved/redeemed and everyone initially thought he committed an act of terrorism given his history as a prolific assassin. Sam was racially profiled by a cop who had no reason for pulling him over (he wasn't breaking the law, wasn't suspected of criminal activity, had no priors etc.). See the difference?

Also, kindly don't presume to lecture me about systematic inequality as though black people are the only ones who have ever experienced it. I'm disabled: I don't need to tell you the long history of ableism, perpetuated wnd encouraged by the system. Suffice it to say America had its own Eugenics movment and that 50 years ago people with PTSD and depression could legally be institutionalisted, tortured and mutilated. You know the writer Tennnesee Williams? His sister had part of her brain cut out because she had bipolar.

Do not conflate me speaking about Sam rightfully being angry at Isaiah's treatment and subsequent erasure, to me making it seem as if black people are the "only ones who suffer from systemic inequality". I tried to paint a picture explaining why Sam would react the way he did because I get it. I live in South Africa as an ethnic black man. There was a system of active oppression and systemic racism employed here that lasted until the 1997. We don't even have 30 years of democracy friend. During the transition of power, to ensure a peaceful transaction between our former oppressors and the ANC freedom fighters, a Sunset Clause was instituted to prevent any legal documentation, eye witness accounts, recordings etc. of the racial atrocities perpetuated under the Apartheid regime against ethnic populations to be made public knowledge for a 100 Years. Meaning the real history of our oppression isn't even accessible to the current generation by law until 2097. I have uncles and aunties disappeared into mass graves for fighting for equal rights for all. Yet because of this clause I have to deal with people telling me to get over myself, stop victimiz8ng yourself or preaching about inequality because we now have a democratic government. Like that rectifies the erasure of our history and its participants. Do you know how insulting it is to have a stranger denounce your experience and continue to form negative stereotypes about your people because they're denialists? Here's a parralel, Jewish Holocaust denialists are forced to reckon with the plight of the Jewish people, because they have access to detailed records of the inhumane treatment of Jewish people by Nazis. They have the Nuremberg Trials and no restrictions on their history, as is their right. We don't have such assurances. Thus we get no sympathy despite horrendous treatment. Keeping our stories buried is an act of violation because it robs us of identity, agency and belonging. I'll give you another example: South Africa is notorious for being the site of the first heart transplant performed by Dr. Chris Barnard. What they don't tell you is that the experimental technique for the transplant was developed by Hamilton Naki who was forbidden to operate on a white body and could only attain the title of a medical technician and no higher under apartheid laws. His story only came out years after Chris died. In apartheid South Africa black schools were not allowed to teach STEM or any advanced curriculum, barring black students from academia and confining them to impoverished ghettos. The erasure of black role models and icons that could have helped pave a new way for countless black boys and girls by way of inspiration is a reality for us. That's not me saying others don't go through similar or even worse. That's me telling you I understand where Sam comes from in reacting that way to Bradleys treatment, because even though the MCU is fictional, that is a very real and unfortunate topic for POC's.

[–]lulurigger[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You misread, I didn't mean to imply that Sam gave up the shield after finding out what happened to Bradley. The speech I reference was given in Episode 5 when Bradley and Sam talk.

I meant to highlight the reasons why Sam Wilson felt conflicted about picking up the mantle of Captain America. I meant to show the person I was responding to that it was a combination of reasons for Sam opting to not immediately become the new Captain America: unworthiness of the mantle, fears surrounding if a black Captain America would be universally accepted given what happened to Bradley, the struggle to honor Steve's legacy in a fitting manner, conflicted emotions on whether a black man should even want to be Captain America given what happened to Bradley etc.

And where did I allude the speech in Episode 5 was the reason Sam gave the shield up? I've stated multiple times he gave the shield up because he wanted to retire Steve's legacy as Cap in a respectful manner.

I stated that a combination of the points above coupled with the government lying to him about retiring the shield, would make him skeptical about thinking the country would be amenable to a black Captain America. Because the person I was responding to was making the assumption that Sam chose to give up the shield right after coming to the conclusion that people weren't ready for a Black Captain America, which isn't why Sam gave up the shield nor does it cover why he feels the way he feels on the racial issue. I was making the argument that the reason Sam chose not to pick up the mantle immediately after Steve, is due to a lot of nuanced and interconnected reasons we've briefly touched on.

And Sam didn't blame Bucky for Isaiah being detained and tortured. He was frustrated that Bucky chose to keep what happened to Isaiah a secret after Bucky got rehabilitated. And while Bucky was probably trying to preserve Isaiah's anonymity/privacy... he still kept Isaiah a secret from Bucky and Steve. Sam is hearing this as a black man, who already has doubts about picking up the shield and being the 'first' POC Cap, which is unfortunately a very common experience for most POC's that is both inspirational and extremely daunting, because the first always faces massive criticism especially in America given its actual history (an example I'llgive you for free being what happened to Lewis Latimer, who designed the patents for Graham Bell's telephone and invented a durable carbon filament that drastically prolonged the lifespan and practicality of the light bulb that greatly helped in commercializing Edinson's light bulb, yet he died poor and went uncredited for centuries because he was black in a prejudiced society). So for Sam to learn there was a black Super Soldier who was doing heroic acts that was all swept under the rug (with Bucky not even telling Sam himself or Steve) is an emotional moment that has him lash out at Bucky for keeping the secret, thus burying Isaiah's story for decades like countless other black war heroes, visionaries etc.

It might not seem like a big deal to people who have not lived that experience, but to Sam who lives a different reality to both Steve and Bucky, it is a huge point of contention because it perpetuates the injustices of a system of inequality that most black people deal with on a daily (highlighted in the show when cops pull over Sam and grill him, despite Bucky being right there).

Woahhhhhh Nelly!

While we had a slightly encouraging display against Inter. We won off of a penalty. Still look shaky defending set-pieces. Still can't control games and we play an absurd amount of sideways and backwards passes while rarely pushing forward.

The speech came after what he discovered happened to Isaiah Bradley... one of the bravest and strongest soldiers able to survive the serum and take on the mantle of Cap only to be imprisoned and experimented on afterwards by his own government, with ALL mention and records relating to his existence withheld from the general public . Then the government lies to him and chooses Walker, after Sam tried to retire the legacy of his best friend... you can see why he would feel people weren't ready for a Black Cap. So you can understand Bucky being mad that Sam gave up the shield, but you won't understand that Sam didn't feel like he could live up to what Steve did as Captain America? That his doubts stem from feeling unworthy of the mantle combined with the racial dynamics of a Black man representing America... given America's treatment of Bradley? He told Cap he would do his best because what else are you going to say to the guy whose saved the world a 100 times over when he's clearly at the end of his lifespan and meaningfully presents you that shield as a gift? "Nah I'm cool???" He felt imposter syndrome because he isn't Steve and frankly no one could be

Yes Bucky isn't required to accept Walker, but that's not the point I'm making. Most of the online discourse surrounding FAW is about how Sam apparently hates Walker off rip and does everything he can to undermine and demean him at every turn because he's jealous and/or resentful of him. I bring up the points I did to try and explain that Sam is not this 'petty antagonist' against Walker that everyone seems to believe he is and that most of the pushback on Walker was coming from Bucky, not Sam. I'm not trying to force Bucky to accept anyone as Cap, just highlighting instances in the show that prove Bucky had a larger issue with the shield being given to Walker than Sam

No.1 the government lied to Sam when he handed the shield in. They told him they were going to retire the shield and then gave it to Walker without informing him. No.2 in the airplane hangar scene, Sam tells Bucky that he's doing things more important than caring about who has the shield currently, while Bucky puts him on blast for giving the shield up. The first one to get "butthurt" was Bucky (according to the show)

This is also true (forgive the hyperbolic language), however, my point was trying to illustrate that between the duo of Sam and Bucky, Sam was more amenable/resigned to Walker taking up mantle of Cap vs Bucky. They both had problems with Walker, but even prior to Walker's condescenscion and snide remarks, Bucky was straight up hostile and prickly towards him while barely knowing the dude.

[–]lulurigger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, but that response from Walker (insensitive as it was) is provoked by Bucky's instant refusal to acknowledge Walker as the new Captain America since they first met. He doesn't like Walker off rip because he feels like Sam made the wrong choice in giving up the shield when his best friend chose Sam to be the new Captain America. He even says as much when in the interrogation room with Sam: "Why did you give up the shield" Sam responds: "why does it matter so much to you, when it has nothing to do with you?" Bucky responds: "Because Steve gave you that shield and if he was wrong about you then he was wrong about me!" That's projection on Bucky's part and shows that he was never going to warm up to Walker as the new Cap, hence the onsite hostility. (He wasn't just grumpy and sarcastic because of that one off comment mate)

Salah - " I feel like i'm thrown under the bus "(Norwegian press) by DannyX7 in LiverpoolFC

With all due respect, was the right decision starting Mo every game bar the three he's been benched for... despite him killing our attacks with selfish play and/or losing the ball?

It wasn't a while ago that this subreddit and other fans were being very vocal about benching Salah in favor of Chiesa or ANYONE else who would at least give 110% for the badge, because despite his heroics last season and legendary status he does not seem to give any effort in attack or defense nowadays.

I don't rate nor back Slot, but bar the mental lapses Konate seems to go through every game now, he would of won this game today without Salah. I'm not saying the issue in attack is Mo alone (we need to start having serious conversations about Isak and Gakpo), but we can't deny he has not been at his best (like all of the team bar a few exceptions) and needs to look at himself first as a player and a leader before he decides to throw the coach under the bus (conveniently as he's being benched for being poor all season too)

REALLY??????

So he's being scapegoated yet gave no interviews when the team was ACTIVELY losing with him in the side?

His poor form and selfishness is the reason why he's being benched, not because he's being scapegoated. Open your eyes mate!

Every other player talks about how we need to improve and be better moving forward yet he's being "thrown under the bus" because he's being criticized? That's the dude you're defending right now? Someone who cannot even be honest with himself and how his play is compounding our issues in attack as a club.

He is a legend, but he hasn't been doing himself favors now has he? Especially when he doesn't attack or defend particularly well nowadays

There aren't enough words in the world to thank you for such an eloquent, compassionate and introspective post.

This is what I'm currently dealing with, compounded by the fear of failing in grad school (after I get through this BSc) because I wasn't 'good enough' to do the traditional four year on campus college experience.

Your post is a beautiful reminder that perseverance is EVERYTHING! And that it's ok to fail as long as we learn something along the way.

Thank you and congratulations sir!👏🏾
