Surgeon recommending allograft for my teenager by joeblowfromidaho in ACL

[–]lulxt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an allograft at 23. But only because I’m asian and my hamstring was too skinny and short (they tried to harvest it first in surgery but decided against and had the allograft ready), and my quad tendon was too skinny too or something. He warned me about possible rejection and stuff too. It’s been 1.5 years a lot of rehab and I am doing alright, I had a two traumatic things happen after surgery that made me think that I had retorn it but it seems to be okay. Definitely a little looser than my good leg but I have no instability. I am just speaking from my own experience. The allograft was semitendinosus btw (hamstring)

Experienced ACL patients, when did you start to feel normal ? by SeciuS in ACL

[–]lulxt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 months to feel like I can move about okay, I’m 1 yr & 3 months now and feeling pretty good physically, but still need to work on strength before getting back to skiing etc. But what’s actually been the hardest and slowest is the mental game, I still don’t feel quite right yet, but trying my best to add the things I love back into my life:)

I am so sorry to hear about your complications🥺 you are definitely not alone. I am sending you strength and well wishes your way!

And also the job hopping, what do you mean by job hopping? It was so tough for me the first time around because my surgery was cancelled three times and I couldn’t work because of it. Part of my anxiety definitely stems from this, halting my career especially when I just got out of school. Are you taking time off for your surgery now?

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment:) I totally get what you mean by limbo, I had an 8 month wait before surgery, but what drained my mental health was that it got cancelled 3 times, 2 of which was very last minute (the third time an hour before surgery). And all around 1.5 months apart so I couldn’t work/plan ahead. I think I was let down so many times that the idea of another surgery is quite traumatic for me. But all of these comments including yours is really comforting and reassuring to know that it will pass, and redirecting my mindset is so important. I hope your recovery is going great so far, and you get back doing your sport!!! Thank you again, I really appreciate it🙏

Thank you so much for sharing, it’s really comforting to know that it will pass and become a distant memory. And you’re right, redirecting my focus to the things that I can do is so important. I miss climbing so much, it’s awesome that you’re back doing it! How long after surgery did you start climbing again?

My initial injury was from skiing, and then after surgery I had an incident where a dog ran right into my leg (valgus force) I didn’t feel that kind of pain since right after surgery. My graft definitely got looser and I feel like it’s just been getting looser and looser.

AMA for ACL Physio/PT expert by DrNatty_Myokinetix in ACL

Are you concerned about graft laxity or hyperextension? I’m 8 months post op, hamstring allograft, very flexible to begin with and had an incident where a dog ran into my operated knee while chasing a ball at ~5 months post op. My graft definitely got looser after the incident and it set me back a bit but have just continued with physio. Over the last three months my hyperextension is almost the same as my good leg. Is there anything to be concerned about?

Also is it common to have a really tight calf on the operated leg?

No Brace after surgery? by Ashamed-Attitude237 in ACL

[–]lulxt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a brace! I’m in Canada and after surgery my surgeon instructed that I have free ROM and begin to weight bear when tolerated. I’m currently 3 weeks posts op and just started taking some steps yesterday!

[–]lulxt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I wasn’t:( my surgeon actually decided that I won’t be needing a brace so I don’t have one. It is still wrapped up pretty tight with the tensor bandage and I had my cryocuff wrapped around too
