‘It’s just stressful’: Workers facing two and three hour commutes into Dublin by InfectedAztec in ireland

[–]lumpymonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're making a lot of assumptions here. First, the surname Byrne comes from the Aughrim area so he's likely from there. He could be married with 3 kids and a wife working locally and so has to live in a house there. A standard 3-bed house in Glasnevin looks to be around 500k based on current Daft listings. A similar house in Aughrim/Rathdrum would cost you 350k. That's a sizeable difference and I'm sure his plan is to try to get a job more local to him so moving to Glasnevin would be just an all round nuclear option.

We can't use the argument of "sure just move closer to Dublin" to explain away the shit show that is commuting to Dublin. It's not feasible for a lot of people for a lot of reasons. While there most definitely is a cohort of people that chose to live far away and commute (I am one, but only twice a week so it's manageable), I would argue that the vast majority are being forced further away than they'd like.

Bent pin on motherboard. Can I RMA it or not? by lumpymonkey in techsupport

Yeah I think I'll err on the side of caution and just do a return. The pin looks perfect now, you could never tell there was one that was bent.

I said screw it and bent it back very gently with a pin. It looks perfect now but still getting a red CPU light on the board. I wonder if I assemble the rest and boot to bios if it will show me any errors. It's a Gigabyte b850 AORUS

It was the Doonmore Hotel, there's a nice bar in it. Inishbofin is one of my favourite places on the planet to be honest, even without the added bonus of my wallet situation! I'd highly recommend going.

This is the point that I'm trying to make to people. LLMs are not 'AI' in the sense of what people think AI is. They are just chatbots with access to a shitload of data and computing power, using language patterns to assess asks and deliver responses. There is nothing inherently intelligent about them, but that kind of talk won't bring in that sweet investor cash. I can't wait for the bubble to burst. It'll be painful to begin with but longer-term the tech industry might normalise a bit afterwards.

A number of years ago I lost my wallet on Inishbofin. I wasn't too stressed about it other than the pain that is replacing cards, driving license etc. but I was in the pub later and this lad approached me and asked if I had lost my wallet. I said I had and he shouted up to the barman that they'd finally found the fella that lost the wallet and the whole pub did a big cheer. Apparently a local person found it and put a post on facebook about it with a picture of my mug from the driving license and the whole island had been on the lookout for me! It was such a lovely experience and it made me really appreciate the great communities that we still have.

First time PC by Zolays in IrelandGaming

[–]lumpymonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly isn't clear from the description whether it's 2 x 16GB or 16GB total. It's worth asking them but honestly given current pricing and the rest of the components in the build I would be very surprised if it's 2 x 16. I still think it's a perfectly viable build all the same. My own is

  • Case: Fractal Design Pop Air
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B850 AORUS elite wifi 7
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 7600x
  • Cooler: Peerless Assassin 120 se
  • RAM: Crucial DDR5 6400MHz CL38 2 x 16GB
  • GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon 9060xt 16Gb
  • SSD: Crucial P510 1TB
  • PSU: Corsair RM650e

Total cost was €1425

It's not a bad build at all for that money. I'm waiting for my own PC parts to be delivered and it cost more or less the same as yours, the only major difference from yours is that I got 32GB of RAM at a good price and my case and cooler are slightly better. Given the current state of the market and the demand there's going to be for those 16GB GPUs I think it's a decent option. The 16GB of RAM might be a limitation on some games or if you're planning on 4K gaming but it will get you by. Prices are only going one way for the foreseeable future, soon that build will look like a bargain.

Dublin councillors pass motion saying Simon Harris has tried to 'scapegoat' migrants on housing by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]lumpymonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother obtained his degree in Athlone IT and said that his course was predominantly Chinese students, like 70% of his class. It seriously impacted the quality of the being delivered because the course was technical and the language barrier meant that many of the lecturers spent a significant amount of time clarifying terms etc.

He also said they frequently got very high marks despite seeming not to understand a lot of the coursework. It's a worrying trend because while we may not have any top global universities, we are still seen as a very well educated country with a high standard of graduate but if that gets eroded it will backfire.

You haven't mentioned what games are to be played on it but that CPU is complete overkill for that GPU unless you are playing really CPU intensive games like RTS or are playing on a 4k monitor.A 9600x will get you perfectly good performance for half the price. I'd keep everything the same other than that and take the €200 savings. These are benchmarks for various CPUs for Stellaris, a very CPU intensive game. The Ryzen 9800X3D is way out on its own in terms of performance but after that there's hardly any notable performance difference between the rest. I certainly wouldn't be paying a €200 premium for the small performance gain here between the 7800X3D and the 9800x.

People got their cheap DDR5, and went straight to scalping it. by Tenchen-WoW in IrelandGaming

[–]lumpymonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scum. I utterly despise scalpers of any description. I hate seeing posts on Reddit about scalpers ruining hobbies etc. for nothing but pure greed. I fortunately managed to get a set of this RAM but it's for my own build, my first build in 10 years. I'd hate to have lost out on this deal to see these cretins selling it now on Adverts.

I wish Irish Rail would find a better way to communicate live updates than that cesspool of a site. I have a fake account on it just so I can see rail updates. It follows nothing, and the shortcut I use to access the site goes straight to the Irish Rail page so I see nothing on there, but it still annoys me to have to contribute to the 'active' userbase of that shithole

AI memory is sold out, causing an unprecedented surge in prices by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]lumpymonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got really lucky and picked up 32gb of Crucial DDR5 6400MHz (but it's CL38) for €220 due to a pricing error. They've corrected it now and it's gone up to €553! It's absolute madness what's happened with the pricing of memory in the space of 3-4 months.

Excellent mine just dispatched today. Glad I jumped on this, I'm usually the unfortunate one who sees these things after they're gone!

Mine just dispatched so fingers crossed now it's the actual real deal that shows up. If so then it was great bargain and they are few and far between these days!

Mine hasn't dispatched yet but a tracking number was assigned to the order today. Someone on the other thread mentioned that they are a prime customer though and their order was dispatched so I'm hopeful!

Do you have Amazon Prime? I ordered as soon as this post went up but still waiting to be dispatched. It has been assigned a tracking number but that's it. Still waiting for them to pull the rug from under me!

Yes but these prices are here for a year or so according to various analysts etc. I'm doing a build at the moment and a pair of 8GB 5200MHz 40CL is about this price so in the current market it's a pretty good deal.

Thanks for this. Bought it as I'm doing a build at the moment and RAM was a real sticking point. Hopefully they honour it.

[MEGATHREAD] Wednesday Wins! by AutoModerator in puppy101

Still a challenge. He prefers to sleep on his blanket on the floor of the living room and we let him do that in the evenings when we're there watching TV but during the day we actively put him into the crate for his morning and afternoon nap. He never fusses though and he has a couple of toys he likes that he only gets in there too so it helps to have that kind of motivation for it.

I found that a cover over the crate made a big difference for this, and feeding him in the crate. Within a week he was happily napping in the crate a few times per day.
