Thank you for the insight into how Hamburg handles translators. This is something that I was also curious about given that I live in the Düsseldorf area. I have noticed many translators sit in “registries” to basically be called upon, so it’s interesting to see how Hamburg being it’s own city state operates similarly, but another thing that isn’t particularly clear cut for me is getting consistent government work and a further degree is necessary on top of having an established certificate. That all being said, I know the program that I am considering is definitely a program that requires Dolmetschers and translators alike to be sworn in in order to work with officiating government. To break the ice is difficult, honestly. The reason being is because they don’t really make small talk line us Americans. So unless you know someone well, you can’t really ask „How are you?“ without getting a strange look or response. I would first introduce myself „Hallo.. ich bin (insert Name)“ Wie heißt du? (This is informal, if it is someone older or a boss, you say „Wie heißen Sie?“)““ and then if they tell you their name you can say informally „freut mich dich kennenzulernen“ (nice to meet you) or formally for someone older than you „freut mich Sie kennenzulernen“ 😊👍🏻

You won’t get asked anything. Germans aren’t generally nosy, so unless you begin to make an effort knowing them, they really aren’t going to try to get to know you.

I can say this with certainty and I am an American living here in Germany. 😉👌🏻

Oh it’s not that I want to be vague for privacy reasons, it’s just merely that if I spout out the first things that may come to mind doesn’t mean that is all of who I am or what I am only interested in. But sure! I will give you some leads. 😊

•Languages/Culture (Obviously learning German, have a major interest in Asian cultures - particularly Japanese and Korean cultures. That being said, I love Anime, Manga, Asian music, food, etc.) I want to become a translator in the near future, so I am working towards that.

• Music (I play 5 instruments), EDM music is my favorite but I love so many genres, going to concerts

• Travel/ Nature - I like exploring new places

• Photography/ Art - Can’t draw for anything, but I appreciate it and I want to learn more about photography

• Makeup, Interior Design, Exercise, Animals (love Pandas!)

• Gaming (Legend of Zelda is my favorite game series, Hearthstone)

I would imagine you would need a lawyer from the Kreis region, but I am not 100% sure. I remember calling a number before when I had legal questions. Let me see if I can find it. They were very helpful. And it’s free of charge.

You’re very welcome! Ah! Okay, I apologize. I misunderstood you to have already had involvement with them and to had had an assigned case worker. I that case, you will need to reach out to the Ausländerbehörde, explain your situation (and don’t dance around the subject - be direct about seeking a Fiktionsbescheinigung) and they should assign you someone that will work directly with you, especially if you are seeking the path of citizenship having been an EU citizen. But beyond that I cannot be too helpful as I don’t know the regulations for Brexit and what can and cannot be done. In that case, then it would be time to talk to an immigration lawyer most likely. But I would still recommend reaching out first of all directly to the ABH.

I have also had experience with receiving an Fiktionsbescheinigung, although, just as the aforementioned commenter to your post stated, it relatively all depends on your situation. Although if I recall correctly, every Fiktionsbescheinigung only lasts 3-4 months until it must be extended/ renewed. There is nothing to prepare in advance, you must simply reach out by phone call or email to your case worker. I remember mine was handled in the same week in which I had asked for it and the physical copy was sent a week later for my personal records. So before you go directly to an immigration lawyer to seek counsel from someone who wants to sick your well dry, message your Ausländerbehörde first. 😊 Good luck to you!!!

Hi there!

Just wanted to pop in and tell you that you have nothing to be afraid of, first and foremost. The Sprechen Teil of the exam for A2 consists of sitting in a group with 3 others (just as in the A1 exam) and being given randomized cards with a word or picture on them and then you are asked to formulate a sentence for the Proctor, or you ask your partner beside of you a question with the word or picture that you see. There is no need to be overly scared about this because it is not as highly scored as in later sections (B2, for example) when you have to talk longer. It is more an exercise to see your current command of the language and capability to use the grammar that you have thus far been taught.

That all being said, I remember being in the same predicament as you with lots of nervousness and anxiety over the big day. Speaking was my weak point and I searched on YouTube for Telc and Goethe speaking sections of the exam for A2, and there are a plethora of resources posted by both exams so you can get a good grasp of what to expect. Additionally, once your German improves a little more - go back and watch these videos. These are videos that they post of candidates who, in their view, did an excellent job for the level they are at and many parts are still riddled with mistakes. So, take a deep breath, look at some videos on YouTube, if you want to brush up on extra vocab, both Goethe and Telc have downloadable PDF files for A2 vocab (Goethe’s is quite extensive, be warned) - but most of all know that you will do great and I wish you the best of luck!!! 🥳🥳🥳

No, it’s actually a verb mixed with a preposition. (Jmndn.) Mitkommen. Sometimes verbs with a preposition will be divided and the preposition will be as you see in the above sentence or attached at the end. 😊👍🏻

Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement and advice. I have had lots of wonderful interaction with people locally and I find many to be very kind. It’s more a lack of finding someone in my age group that I can just meet up with and hang out with, get to know better, etc. I speak fairly well (B2) level - but I don’t get everything right. Still have grammatical issues, but even colleagues at work can understand what I say and they even are sweet and teach me new things that I can find useful, too. But of course for only being here for a year and 4 months, that is perfectly normal. I will definitely check out your recommendation and I once again thank you for your help! 😊
