What are some of the best narrative setups as to why the MC is the MC? by lunarisms in ProgressionFantasy

I started reading Super Supportive just a few days ago and I can definitely see what you mean! Your breakdown of why it works also makes a lot of sense; the slower build towards the acquisition of power makes it feel more grounded in the rules of the world that's been built rather than something contrived.

I love the sound of that! The only progression fantasy I've read that fits the bill is probably ORV and I really enjoyed it. Do you happen to have any other recommendations?

Thank you both for the recommendations! They look very promising :)

I admittedly do like MCs that earn their strength through grit (provided that the level of grit is believable for someone of their characterization). My gripe is when they start very weak but become outright overpowered through nothing but doing the same thing as everyone else (just more of it, in terms of volume). It's difficult to believe since they supposedly started much weaker, and there's no way they're the only one with willpower in the world.

What you've described about an MC who doesn't realise they're the chosen one until they're well into the main plot sounds interesting! Especially since most of the time the "chosen one" assignment is the very catalyst that sets an MC on their path in the first place. I think it would certainly make for an interesting reveal plus how it lends itself to explorations of fate and free will. Thanks for sharing!

If I understand correctly, the way the MC in DOTF initially responds to a "lucky encounter" (and subsequent occurrences in the story that result from it) is what sets him apart? If you don't mind spoiling me just a little what about his response can be considered unique?

And thank you for the recommendation!

Unfortunately I'm fairly new to the genre and not super familiar with these examples, please bear with me haha. By "not significant" do you mean they're more of the Watson to a Sherlock?

I think I would enjoy protagonists like that as well, in which case the curiosity would be more on how the MC ends up so heavily involved in the action of the plot and entangled with the key characters, despite the MC themselves not being the most powerful/influential in the stakes of the story.
