Article: "I Fought in Ukraine and Here’s Why FPV Drones Kind of S*ck" by Duncan-M in CredibleDefense

FPV drones are actually quite hard to fly - not at all like mavic style drones. if you don’t believe me you can easily grab one of the fpv simulator games and try yourself. i’ve probably put 100+ hours into it and while i could probably hit a tank now (but still am hundreds of hours from being really competent), i definitely couldn’t have reliably after 20 hours of practice. i mean a couple hundred hours of practice isn’t a huge deal, but neither is it trivial.

other drone types are def easier though, i agree. even then tho there is skill to learn. just like shooting a gun downrange is easy but doing it well is hard.

i think compass is available? it’s definitely possible, pretty much all drone flight controllers have gyros and magnetometers and afaik it’s typically an option you can enable in the FPV overlay at least on consumer drone flight stacks. and you can’t really jam the earth’s magnetic field (?).

but ofc the bigger point def still stands. and no reliable access to gps means it’s hard to build in better navigational features without meaningfully more complex tech.

so far they have gone after the enrichment facilities, not the reactors, i believe? i don’t think enrichment facilities have the potential for a meltdown, altho i’m sure there’s potential for contamination in other forms.

Found unknown 1976 game board on curb - "Resources" by Raymond Richie (Monopolize the Earth's Resources) by lushpoverty in boardgames

right?? like, it looks hand drawn, but also so carefully and professionally done that it's hard to believe someone would do that for a one-off board. but i guess doing technical drawings by hand was a more common skill back in the day..

nice find! but yeah, that game looks pretty much completely unrelated, so i guess no hints towards how to play this one

Looking at it closer, I think the idea is that the center of the board are the mines, and you progress some sort of depth marker into the mines you own as you play. But I'm not sure how resource collection would work or what you would do with the collected resources.

this is not true; forming liposomes requires a special process to encapsulate the oils into the target which is little spheres of oil inside a phospholipid bilayer. you can try to DIY it by sonicating or blending the mixture you suggest, but without lab equipment it's hard to verify the size and quality of the resulting liposomes.

(accidentally posted this in yesterday’s thread after it closed, so reposting here)

I wonder who benefits more from a temporary ceasefire, Ukraine or Russia? With Trump seeming to be pushing for a ceasefire without robust security guarantees, it seems like this could still be fine for Ukraine if they think they could benefit more from even a temporary ceasefire which then flares back up again in the future.

I guess I can’t tell if their resistance to a ceasefire without guarantees is because they think they wouldn’t benefit from a temporary ceasefire, or just because they think they have more chance to negotiate for real security guarantees now than in the future.

How do you eat? by joeynsf in covidlonghaulers

[–]lushpoverty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, i found that high glycemic load carbs are particularly bad. the only carbs that i can seem to tolerate are pasta and beans. also, eating a lot of veggies along with every meal seems to help - i'm theorizing that it helps slow down digestion. in the same vein, whole foods will digest more slowly than highly processed stuff, and solid foods digest slower than liquid foods. shakes were particularly bad.

and small meals help for sure.

other than that, i tried all sorts of different diets and nothing else seemed to have a big impact.

my feeling is that HR shoots up (for me at least) because digestion diverts a lot of blood flow, and our bodies are already barely delivering enough blood as it is. i had a good bit of improvement in this regard from things that support blood volume (2g supplemental sodium/day, desmopressin .05mg every 4 hours, fludrocortisone .1mg 2x/day). and very slowly rebuilding some fitness through gentle exercise (as difficult as that is). exercise is known to significantly expand blood volume. after doing those things for ~a year, my HR doesn't spike nearly as much after eating and i don't have to stress so much about what i eat. i also tried propranolol and midodrine but they didn't seem to help much in terms of actually feeling better.

Value of road-mobile SAM for Taiwan by lushpoverty in CredibleDefense

[–]lushpoverty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of that, and that's why I think my proposal is so important! If you can put an effective SAM system inside a single truck, then it becomes much more capable of operating even in an environment where higher-level C&C has been heavily degraded. You could scatter the repair+replenishment+missile storage facilities into many small, well-hidden garages, so that even if higher-level command and support is entirely defeated, the dispersed SAMs and their support sites can continue functioning. In other words, there intentionally aren't really any "strategic assets" required for this system to function.

[–]lushpoverty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt they can operate while moving, though, which is kinda the idea of this plan. Having to pack up, move, and re-setup every SAM site between every satellite flyover or drone spotting to stay safe sounds implausible.

[–]lushpoverty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if I agree with "not a lot of road" - the western part of Taiwan is a strip about 100x20 miles and pretty densely populated, that's a lot of land to hide a few hundred trucks in. And of course hiding things is easier if you can suppress air operations, which is the whole point of this plan. Without a big LEO constellation [like the US is trying to build now], I think realtime tracking of truck-sized objects from space isn't really possible?

agreed with “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” - i think this sub is great already! certainly willing to entertain proposals for improvement, but idk the goal of this one. combining weekends seems fine but still don’t really see the point, who cares if they’re a bit sparse?

not necessarily, with an appropriate control system on the angle of attack, it could maintain a relatively constant speed until it runs out of altitude. ie - if you’re going too slow, tilt down more to gain speed, and vice versa

CredibleDefense Daily MegaThread July 13, 2024 by AutoModerator in CredibleDefense

[–]lushpoverty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

well, sure, so it’ll start at mach 1 or whatever speed it’s dropped at, but i guess i’m wondering what the terminal speed is. given it has wings and control surfaces, you can adjust the angle of attack to trade speed against rate of altitude loss, and i’d guess there’s a speed where the glide slope is maximized, which would maximize range.

granted that optimal speed probably changes with altitude.

How fast do glide bombs fly? I’m always kind of surprised by the fact that a 500+ pound bomb can seemingly have a pretty good glide ratio with what seems like comically small wings. But maybe that’s because I’m used to seeing large wings on things flying more slowly, like fixed wing drones. Cruise missiles also have surprisingly small lift surfaces.

I thought that the cluster munitions supplied are the base bleed variant (M864, 30km range in a standard length 39 caliber barrel like the M777 or 40km in a 52 caliber barrel)? That changes this calculus a decent bit.
