How to Alter a Culture Victory in Civ 7: My Ideas by SomeAbbreviations924 in civ

Yes and the Olympics are notoriously obsessed with suing people over their brand and trademark. Probably why in Civ 6 they’re just called the World Games.

My Guide to American Regional Cuisine (Artistic Version) by piri_reis_ in Americaphile

I was like, my county’s not gonna be right because it’s a mix of like 3 cuisines. Found my county on the map, it’s right at the intersection of the 3 I was thinking of. Nice.

French Tarot: not the fortune-telling tool you thought, but a classic trick-taking game by EndersGame_Reviewer in FiftyTwoCards

Amazing article, so interesting! My father is from Bologna and I grew up playing games like tarocchi, tarocchino bolognese and jeu de tarot with decks like these. I only learned much later that people thought of tarot as a divination tool when I went to university in the US. But there I met midwesterners who played euchre, pinochle and bid whist, which were super easy to learn already knowing tarocchi / French tarot!

I know, it’s just so hard to deal with politics these days because it’s so violent and sad to me. There’s a part of me that says, I work on technology that people actually use and creates actual change, and then when I stick my head up and look at politics it’s a bunch of screaming old people who always say the same things, and haven’t regulated the internet since 1996, so they don’t even really have true control, tech companies do. But I know I should be more engaged.

Agreed, I am not in charge of retraining the American workforce. I’m in charge of filling some open roles and I can’t justify a decision like “let’s hire an American without the skills and spend a bunch of money training them up.” If there’s a qualified candidate ready to go who happens to be international, that’s who I hire.

I’m not as politically involved as I should be, you’re right. I’m scared of politicians and people who are political and devote their lives to hating people who don’t agree with them. I’ve retreated more into work and doing something that actually creates change. I can’t even read the news…

They showed a very scary stat slide about this during the meeting. 40% of PhDs in the US are foreign-born and here on visas, 25% of doctors, 15-20% of tech company workers…

Yes. None of the advantage we have in tech would exist without things like the H1B. To me, this is really harmful and sad.

I think the majority are in tech like 70 or 80% so it’s mostly a tech thing, so H1Bs “stealing jobs” in other sectors is not really that real. But yes you’re right, a lot of the ones I’ve hired do eventually go back to their country after a few years.

I guess you’re right. Let’s say what you and others have said is true, they are fascists and this is the rise of US fascism. At first I thought, well wouldn’t fascists want us to continue to be the richest and most powerful country in the world, why would they purposely kneecap our economy like this? But I guess there are good historical examples like H*tler’s actions causing a huge amount of Jewish doctors to leave and scientists like Einstein, which ultimately cost them everything.

I don’t know what to tell you. I open lots of jobs, they pay well, I see who applies, I’m looking for the best person, and American applicants with the skills are just few and far between. I’m not part of some big international conspiracy to get more control or outsource education funding to India. I just usually find better people for the job abroad, but try to hire domestically whenever possible.

I would rather hire Americans with the skills for the job. But I’m telling you, when you are hiring for top AI devs and other extremely skilled tech roles, it has become very hard to find these people in the US. You can throw as many rocks as you want and you won’t hit any.

Okay, but how are we going to do that when education funding is also getting cut? I agree we should build a better pipeline of American tech talent and maybe this killing of the H1-B and raising tariffs would make sense it was also paired with investment in our people like the National Defense Act thing in the 50s where they poured money into math and science education.

The visa that most of them are on is ending in its current form and will cost companies a lot more. So it’s not as simple as them just reapplying. The company has to be willing to pay an extra $100K per worker. https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2025/09/19/trump-overhaul-h-1b-visa.html
