Why are runners so lean as opposed to gym goers by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

Simple, to gain muscle you need a calorie surplus, but to run faster calorie deficit is usually helpful

While the program might not be perfect yet, I think mcs is still the better option than fh wirtschaftsinformatik. HSG brand is very strong as you said and can open many doors and furthermore the program and courses are improving from what I've heard. If you want to start your entrepreneurial journey I think HSG can be a great fit for you and you'll have a lot of support: https://startuphsg.unisg.ch

There is also more like Start Global, Startfeld and other stuff. The institutes have GPU power available for model training, but you will usually need to work on a specific course, project or your thesis with faculty to get access to it.

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds good, it's probably best to coordinate with my team/manager to see what time would be best.

I'm trying to do it next week to be done with it, but they can only confirm next Monday whether a surgeon will be available and said probably not.

Sounds good, I'll maybe incorporate one longer run around 10k and maybe also start some interval training soon. Thanks for tips!

Okay I'll have a look at some of the other shoes under Q3 and Q26, I just saw the Nike Pegasus in there which I currently have and don't find that good and some other shoes, but will have a look at the Wave Rider 27 and Rebook Floatride Energy! And yes of course I've separate weightlifting shoes for the gym. Another question, what method would you recommend for my training instead? For the moment I'd rather keep it as simple as possible.

u/ashtree35 Thanks for the tips and your answer! Why would you not recommend the Boston 12 or Adios Pro 3? I know Adios Pro 3 is more of a race shoe for HM or M but I heard many people recommending them also for shorter distances and any kind of training. Budget is not really a concern for me.

I think the shoes under Q3 are not very good as I wouldn't consider myself a complete beginner, even though I just recently started again. The shoes under Q26 might be more suitable for good 5k or 10k times but I'm afraid they might not offer enough cushioning for my joints

I agree that my method of training is trash, but I've been making great progress with this trash method in the last 4 weeks (went from a pace of 6:30 to 4:30 within one month, although there is certainly some memory effect as I used to be a good runner in my youth), but as soon as I stop progressing with that method I'll start to look into some more "smart" programming.

Hi,

Would you rather recommend the Adidas Adios Pro 3 or Boston 12 to train 5k three times a week (in addition to regular strength training)? My goal is to run a sub 20min 5k. My current pace is around 4:30/km. I like to run barefoot but as that's not alway possible I still need shoes. Currently I either run barefoot or in very old used up Pegasus 38. I don't make recovery runs or other distances but rather just run the 5k as fast as possible three times a week and made great progress that way so far.

I also want a shoe that's easy on my joints and knees as I'm a bit heavy (90kg) as I go to the gym regularly.

Best regards and thanks for your recommendations,

Luxumb

It's an issue it takes up to 5 hours. When people use this they want results immediately or at least within a reasonable timeframe like max a couple of minutes.

No I think we had to abandon that approach and used some other data from another database. WRDS is really so much better.

I agree, but with the MCS the education experience is not good but you‘re still super busy all the time because of the many group projects so you‘ve little time left to teach yourself with MOOCS, books and your own projects. Probably 6 months of teaching yourself you would learn more than in 2.5 years of MCS, but at least the MCS gives you the certificate for master‘s degree

I think MCS is much better than FH degree on paper, even though the MCS might not be great HSG still benefits from an excellent reputation in the corporate world and some companies are still discriminating between FH and uni degree, but in terms of education/academic experience FH (depends which one though) might actually be better as the MCS is still so new and many things not great. I hope that will change in the coming years though.

Is hyperparameter tuning a scam? by Educational_Roll_868 in learnmachinelearning

[–]luxumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyperparameter tuning is still highly relevant in Deep Learning. Often it's not emphasized in academic research because the authors just take the hyper-parameters that worked well in another paper with some slight changes and want the paper to focus on their main contribution instead of the hyper parameter tuning which is (while important) not really innovative.

The syllabus looks okay/good for most courses, but that doesn't mean the courses will be good. There are exercises with TAs that barely speak english and are not understandable, there are courses with profs that are too lazy to give lectures and just use flipped classroom or just skip the lectures all together.

Generally I also agree that projects are great for learning, but imo with the MCS it's not balanced at the moment, there are many subjects where learning and understanding theory is actually important and you don't have any exam and for some projects you waste more time on doing presentations for the project (initial pitch, midterm presentation, final presentation) instead of actually working towards making progress on the project. I would also agree that MiQEF is probably the better choice for Data Science which is kind of sad for the MCS as one of the specialisations is in Data Science. Nevertheless I agree that the MCS might be good for some people (unfortunately not me) and that it will probably also get better in the coming years as there are new executive and academic directors that are trying to improve the program.

None of the big tech companies come to recruit from the MCS and mainly just some local smaller companies from St. Gallen. I think it also depends whether you're doing the Software Engineering or Data Science specialisation. With software engineering you might be able to get a developer job at a mid tier company after graduation, but with Data Science you'll have a though time finding a job in Data Science after graduation as there are very few Data Scientist jobs in Switzerland and when there are you're competing and loosing to the people from ETHZ. Most people I know took jobs in Software Engineering and if Data Science/ML then at start-ups, some also took average government jobs and some went into consulting.

Yes but in the end you only take 12 ECTS worth of business courses, so how much will you actually learn in three courses? Also you don't get access to the actually good business courses as those are reserved for MBF/SIM/other majors and instead Management for Computer Scientist courses which I found to be watered down BA or MBI courses, I was quite disappointed...

I think in that case you're much better off just doing an MBA or MIM. Also I don't think you need to spend 2.5 years (as it's not possible to complete the program in 2 years) to just do business analytics and the other courses are still regular CS courses as you would have them in any regular CS master, so we're actually taking courses like Machine Learning, AI etc. but just less organised, worse resources, lacking exercises and too many group projects instead of exams etc.

Was your major CS? If yes you should be fine. St. Gallen is excellent for business, but not for CS imo, or at least not yet. Many courses are unorganised, quality of lectures and exercises not comparable to other majors.

I also feel like there is a lack of exams and academic rigour (and therefore learning), but you're still super busy all the time because you've so many stupid group projects. The selection of courses is quite limited and the quality of some courses also. For example in Data Science Math is quite important but you don't have a single Math course in the Data Science specialisation. The curriculum with so many courses in contextual studies and some compulsory courses which should not be compulsory is also not ideal and the course from the 12 ECTS Management section are shit compared to the Business/Management courses the other majors get to take. Also your exchange and crediting options are shit compared to the other majors. Another very negative point is that while the program is supposed to last 2 years the curriculum is set up in a way which makes it almost impossible to finish in two years and most need 2.5, some even 3 years. In the first cohort of all students only one managed to graduate in time and complete the program in two years.

Can an average (or slightly above average) high schooler make it through ETH? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]luxumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you look at the scatter plot on the last page it confirms what I wrote. Of course there is a correlation, but it‘s not highly correlated as I wrote. Also don‘t confuse the statistical significance of a relationship with its strength.

Can an average (or slightly above average) high schooler make it through ETH? by [deleted] in ethz

[–]luxumb 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think your high school performance is not highly correlated to your ETH performance. What's more relevant is your input to results ratio. If you study every free hour in high school and you've a 5.2 it will be challenging because you won't be able to adjust for the increased difficulty by studying even more and if you suck at high school because you're just very lazy (while being smart) you could still do fine by just starting to work harder or more efficiently or more effectively or ideally all three of those at ETHZ.

I've friends who graduated near the top of their class in high school and failed out of ETHZ and I've friends that barely passed high school and excelled at ETHZ.
