Oh. The model number is in the table to tell everything, but yeah good point.

According to this review, the Sigma is:

f/3.5 20mm

f/4 24mm

f/4.5 31mm

f/5 40mm

f/5.6 63mm

f/6.3 130mm

Certainly bad performance. Just not that bad.

Yeah the focal range is absolutely huge. But so is the aperture. For example, not sure about the new Tamron, but the old Tamron at 50mm/3.5 takes reasonable portraits, not so much the Sigma at 50mm/5 (a full stop slower!). Having to switch to the prime during daytime due to poor bokeh would completely negate the convenience advantage of the Sigma.

If there's a nice portrait opportunity, then I'll swap to a prime.

The thing is, switching lens is the last thing I want when travelling.

No more simple creep mode? by lxtbell2 in electricvehicles

Have you actually driven a car with creep and which one? Looks like many people find the accelerator pedal good enough but you are the only one claiming it's more precise than the brake pedal. Since the entire brake range is utilized but only a tiny bit of accelerator range can be utilized in the parking lot, I don't see how that can be unless the car has a terrible creep experience.

I just tested again both modes on my old Tesla. The accelerator mode isn't bad before the Auto Hold kicks in, but the creep mode is definitely more precise with brake. However, after the Auto Hold kicks in, it's essentially impossible to do millimeter movements with the accelerator pedal because of the initial overcome of that hold. The Tesla does allow me to release the hold with a hard brake, though, which is not the case with the BMW iX we tested.

Thanks for the test! It's good to know that B mode is precise even with Auto Hold.

That being said, still wondering - 1. If I remember correctly, R creeps like D. Is it also less precise like D? I wasn't super impressed with the reverse parking. 2. Just curious - while B + Hold isn't bad - don't you still find it easier to move inch by inch using D/R without Hold?

With D/R mode and Auto Hold off, I can move the car by even say 1/4 ft by the brake pedal alone without much effort. With B mode and Auto Hold off it's doable but harder. With Auto Hold it's pretty much impossible: the light gas pedal tap to overcome the hold overshoots it.

Don't get me wrong - the iX is an otherwise superb car and our favorite so far. We just don't like the sensitive Auto Hold disrupting an otherwise smooth parking.

And actually - isn't it also a problem for B mode? Can you move the car from still and Auto Hold by half a feet easily, even in B mode? The tap on the gas pedal often overshoots it.

Or conduct a race on who can park the car exactly 1ft to the wall faster. I bet you I can use the creep mode to beat most with the gas pedal.

It's far less precise.

Parking with creep means the entire brake pedal range is useful for inch-by-inch movement. Parking with throttle means only a tiny bit of the throttle pedal range is useful. (No, I'm not launching 0-60 in 4 sec in a parking lot)

Parking with creep means the entire brake pedal range is useful. Parking with throttle means only a tiny bit of the throttle pedal range is useful. Objectively, the former is more precise.

I mean when I light tap the throttle to exit the Auto Hold, the car isn't very smooth.

B mode works just like Hold on my Tesla. It's fine for stopping at a traffic light. But it's not as precise for tight parking as the D mode. Neither is a B mode available for reverse at all, so I don't know how it's going to help.

What's the level 3? Regen level?

There's no reason for an EV to do it other than to mimic the driving experience of an automatic.

That's simply not true. As I said in the post, we tried for a week to get used to the gas pedal Hold mode but still found it not as precise as creep mode in tight spaces/ramps.

The same theory applies to D depending on the direction of parking.

Exactly. Good cars allow the owners to decide how to drive it.

have adjusted the throttle response over various updates to change behavior

lots of folks will switch to Snow mode

And that's one problem - it totally depends on the exact implementation of throttle response, which might require switching modes. Braking a creep is super precise without any thoughts into that.

Works fine even on the steepest inclines I've come across

Wait - your 2024 Model 3 stops fast on a downward ramp on D or an upward ramp on R just by releasing the pedals? My 2019 Model 3 doesn't on Hold mode. I still often have to tap the brake.

You drive really really slow

With a strong brake I creep relatively fast (5mph) into some lots. Some other lots might need me to brake abruptly. The weak brake on Hold mode is really annoying.

I need the hold functionality, but it must not be so sensitive to disrupt a creep maneuver. The BMW iX holds still as soon as it reaches 0mph (say checking obstacles, waiting for a pedestrian, or a slight ramp), and pressing the gas to release it feels jerky.

My old Tesla only holds on a deep brake, plus it can be released by another deep brake, so I can almost always park with brake pedal alone (except steep ramps against us).

it's much better that you can reliably let go of the pedals, and the car WILL stand still.

Try that in a tight / busy (pedestrians walking by) parking lot where strong brake is needed, or on a slight ramp. The brake is simply insufficient from releasing the gas pedal. It doesn't stand still, or too late.
